The second installment of the DC Cinematic Universe — if you consider Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice kickstarted it — is coming in the form of Suicide Squad on August 5, and needless to say, DC fans are excited. From the first proper cinematic introduction of fan-favorite character Harley Quinn to the new interpretation of the Joker by Jared Leto, there's a lot to look forward to in Warner's neon take on the baddest superhero team around.
Now, early reviews are starting to come in after Warner scheduled another test screening in California, and it looks like Suicide Squad might well be worth the hype. Harley Quinn kills it, obviously, but overall the action and the pacing of the movie left lucky viewers more than satisfied.
First Reviews Of Suicide Squad Are Overwhelmingly Positive
A few comments about Suicide Squad have made it onto Reddit after the latest test screening — keep in mind, viewers weren't aware of which movie they were about to see, except for the fact that it was an action movie.
Reddit user soyodu writes that despite a few flaws, the movie is really good overall.
There was lots that I really liked, good action, pacing (for the most part). [...] The villain was a big disappointment considering how fresh the idea I thought it was. I still thought it was a very good movie.
For user Malachim, the strong point of Suicide Squad is that it's "a very straightforward story with an amazing cast." He adds that the movie is destined to please comic book fans, which is certainly a really good sign:
This is the type of movie that demands a sequel. I'm sure critics will find ways to hate it (it's basically a gritty action movie with comic book characters and a Hot Topic aesthetic, which honestly might turn critics off), but DC fans will like it. The BIG thing is that the movie literally saves DCEU Batman. This Batman is BTAS ['Batman The Animated Series'] personified.
But it's probably user trevormax1234 who's really getting our hopes up, praising the movie in its entirety as well as the Harley Quinn/Margot Robbie match. Although many fans were quick to point out that early screenings of Batman v Superman seemed to lead to the same kind of overwhelmingly positive reactions when they ended up being disappointed, this viewer thinks Suicide Squad will actually get it right.
I can swear to you this one is different. From someone who hasn't even liked the past 3 DC Film releases ('Dark Knight Rises,' 'Man of Steel' and 'BvS'). This IS the best DC film since the 'Dark Knight.' But is it better?
The short answer is no. But is it a good movie? Hell yes!
Without a DOUBT the best character in the film is Harley Quinn. I can easily see now why Warner Brothers are pushing for a film with her front and center. She isn't front and center in this film as it's more of an ensemble piece, but she is still a focal point. And Margot knocked it out of the park. I don't want to see anyone else play Harley Quinn again, ever. Margot Robbie IS Harley Quinn.
The story is fun, witty and straight forward.
You Can See Why Harley Quinn Is Already Getting Her Solo Movie
That Warner Bros. is betting more movies on a character that hasn't even shown up on screen yet is a really good sign for Margot Robbie's Harley Quinn. Last month, it was announced that Harley would get her own solo movie, following in the footsteps of Wonder Woman to bring more awesome female superheroes to the big screen.
When you consider how much Robbie already loves her character, it really seems like a no-brainer.
"I am so not done playing her yet. I will do whatever I can to keep playing Harley for another couple of years. Until my body gives out and I can't do it anymore."
Could The Success Of Suicide Squad Determine The Future Of The DCCU?
All in all, it looks like the reshoots for Suicide Squad paid off. After the average performance of Batman v Superman, which faired well at the box office but didn't make as much as expected, the antihero gang has got big shoes to fill. We'll also have to wait and see if it can manage to bring critics and fans together, something that the hero showdown of Batman v Superman absolutely failed to do.
But if an ensemble cast such as this one can make fans happy, then there's certainly a lot of solo movies to come.
Are you getting excited for Suicide Squad? Do you enjoy reading reviews before seeing a movie, or do you feel like it twists your expectations too much?
