The CW spin-off of The Vampire Diaries is so widely successful, that The Originals may as well be world-wide publicity for the bustling city of New Orleans and its surrounding bayous.
Aside from the pilot, which was strictly filmed in New Orleans, Louisiana, it can be tricky to decipher the true New Orleans locations from the ones fabricated elsewhere or on set. Luckily, when there's a Mikaelson, there's a way.
What You Think Is The French Quarter Is Probably Olde Town Conyers
Most scenes in The Originals actually take place in suburban Atlanta, Georgia. Olde Town Conyers is often passed off as the French Quarter of NOLA, often using Center St., Railroad St. or Commerical St. behind The Pointe.
With the classic ornate wire railings, many of these streets can easily be disguised to substitute the French Quarter. Just don't expect any of the street signs featured in the show to be accurate.
If you walk around these areas of Olde Town, you may recognize the go-to voodoo shop Jardin Gris, or The Celtic Tavern where Marcel Gerard occasionally frequents in Season 1.
Also, in Georgia and New Orleans, you'll find far too many bayous which will make you feel right at home with the werewolves.
What Else Won't You Find In The French Quarter?
The St. James Infirmary, a jazz club supposedly located at Algiers in New Orleans, is actually fabricated on set. You may remember it as the bar which serves as a neutral territory for supernatural beings. This bar is also featured in The Vampire Diaries, when Stephan seeks refuge and asks for Klaus's help.
You also will have a hard time finding Rousseau's bar, where Camille tends the bar. While the pilot used a real bar, most scenes were also shot on set in Georgia. This is also the case for the courtyard and home of the Mikaelsons (and Marcel's former residence), as well as Hailey and Jackson's apartment which is located directly across from one another.
In fact, the hectic noise of Bourbon St. which we often hear or see below the apartment is added in via Common Gateway Interface (CGI), a standard way for web servers to generate web pages dynamically.
What You Actually Can Visit in NOLA
The Originals wouldn't be the same without the witches practicing their magic in the signature above-ground cemeteries of New Orleans, namely Lafayette Cemetary No. 1. This also happens to be the same cemetery used in movies Easy Rider and Double Jeopardy.
Speaking of witches, you can also find the exterior shots of St. Anne's church, which we know as the location of Davina's lair. We may refer to it as St. Anne's, but it is actually the St. Louis Cathedral located opposite Jackson Square, which happens to be the oldest cathedral in the country.
For a little fun, stop by Marcel's party place, at the Hotel Royal. You can also visit the corner of Royal and Dumaine, where we've witnessed our Marcel strutting around.
If you'd like to recreate a Camille and Klaus moment, find your way to 1041 Royal Street, which is located at the corner of Royal and Ursulines, where Klaus and Camille have been spotted.
Remember that romantic scene on the Moon Walk between Marcel and Rebekah in Season 1? That was all real New Orleans. So, take a nice stroll along the riverfront and see if you feel the love. Maybe even create some new memories of your own.
If you want to go all out and be a Mikaelson, you can also visit one of the few vampire stores in the world (and even get custom-made fangs) at Boutique du Vampyre.
