It's National Best Friends Day! From The Blues Brothers to The Nice Guys, there's no shortage of awesome buddy comedies. But to honor this probably-made-up holiday, we compiled a list of some of the best female-centric films that celebrate all things friendship for all the fierce movie-loving ladies out there.

Whether you're in the mood to laugh or cry, each of these movies will make you want to call every friend you love to let them know how important they are to you.

From the modern movies to the classics, here are 13 movies to watch with your best gal pals for National Best Friends Day:

1. Bridesmaids (2011)

We're already off to a strong start with Paul Feig and Judd Apatow's hit comedy Bridesmaids. It's as touching as it is funny, and the perfect movie to watch over and over again with your besties. I won't even spent time writing more of a description because chances are you've already seen and loved it.

2. Romy and Michele's High School Reunion (1997)

Another lighthearted comedy, Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is perfect to watch with that one friend you've known since childhood. The movie features two best friends who were always on the outskirts of the "cool" crowd. As they prepare for their 10 year reunion, they become determined to show their rivals how much they've changed.

3. Waiting to Exhale (1995)

Waiting to Exhale, directed by Academy Award-winner Forest Whitaker, tells the story of four friends, all of whom are facing different romantic troubles. Together they provide a shoulder to cry on and some harsh advice, but in the end they all have a greater understanding of self-worth and a deep appreciation for their friends.

4. Now and Then (1995)

Now and Then explores the lives of four childhood friends at two pivotal points: As a group of young teenagers about to embark on summer vacation, and as adults on the cusp of parenthood. Some of us may now be too old for summer break, but this movie will satisfy those nostalgic feelings.

5. Pitch Perfect (2012)

Plenty of these movies include a musical number at some point, but nothing tops the sing-alongability of Pitch Perfect. The motley crew of talented collegiate a capella singers join forces to win the national singing competition. There are plenty of movies about friendship and rooting for the underdog, but this one comes with a kick-ass soundtrack.

6. A League Of Their Own (1992)

This one is as much about sports as it is about sisterhood. It's a fictional period piece about the real-life All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. The friendships of the women and their love of the game will inspire you and bring tears to your eyes.

7. Muriel's Wedding (1994)

If you haven't already seen Muriel's Wedding, you're sorely missing out. Toni Colette plays the socially awkward but kindhearted Muriel, whose only wish is to get married. After a life surrounded by vicious and spiteful faux friends, she finds a paramour in the equally eccentric Rhonda. Between the outfits, Aussie accents and ABBA, Muriel's Wedding is a treasure.

8. Baby Mama (2008)

When it comes to strong women in entertainment, it's difficult not to mention comedy powerhouses Tina Fey and Amy Poehler. Baby Mama is the brain child of Michael McCullers that focuses on an uptight businesswoman (Fey) and her emotionally arrested surrogate (Poehler). Despite their differences, they foster an unlikely friendship and work together to bring a baby into the world.

9. Thelma & Louise (1991)

I think it's impossible to have a list of movies driven by female protagonists without bringing up Thelma & Louise. In the Academy Award-winning Ridley Scott movie, this daring duo's two-day vacation quickly turns into the adventure of a lifetime.

10. Frances Ha (2012)

Obviously I needed to share a little bit of indie love on this list. Frances Ha is the story of two best friends who have to face the reality of growing apart as their life paths diverge. Noah Baumbach's stylish comedy-drama might not be for all audiences, but it's a strong depiction of the peaks and valleys that take place naturally over the course of a friendship.

11. The Color Purple (1985)

Not only is Steven Spielberg's take on The Color Purple a fantastic movie that explores the depth and importance of female friendships, it's also one of the most powerful and celebrated movies in modern cinema. It's a far cry from most of the feel-good comedies on the list, but a hugely significant piece of work.

12. The First Wives Club (1996)

The First Wives Club is all about finding love in your friendships. When the romantic relationships of three college best friends crumble, they discover strength and fulfillment in each other after rekindling their friendships.

13. Clueless (1995)

Clueless is packed to the brim with flawless fashion choices, fab lingo, and — best of all — great friendships. Just like high school, it's not always picture-perfect for Cher and the gang, but in the end they always stick together. Maybe it's because she and Dionne are both named after "famous singers of the past," who now do infomercials.

As is the case with most lists, my compilation of movies is by no means exhaustive and I'd love to hear what movies you watch to celebrate friendships between women. Head to the comments section and let me know what you think!
