Today's National Best Friends Day, and while we've already looked at movies to watch with your gal pals and cinema's best imaginary friends, it's also important to show some love for our animal companions.

With that in mind, we're taking a look at some of our favorite animal buddy pictures, proving once and for all that animals truly are man's best friend.

Turner & Hooch (1989)

Tom Hanks is basically a drama legend now, so it's easy to forget that he built his career on a string of successful comedies. Lucky for us, one of those hits saw Hanks team with a big slobbery dog to solve a murder case, proving that he'd one day become a two-time Oscar winner.

Air Bud (1997)

It's rare to come by a dog that plays basketball, so if you happen to meet one, you definitely need to make him your best friend. And if you're not a basketball fan, then don't worry, because Bud can also play football, soccer, baseball and volleyball.

Free Willy (1993)

Free Willy proves that if you try hard enough, you can befriend a killer whale, which is something our entire team lies awake at night dreaming about.

Ed (1996)

Another seminal entry in the animals-playing-sports genre, Ed features Matt LeBlanc — on the cusp of Friends superstardom — as a Minor League Baseball player who happens to live and play with a chimpanzee. Naturally, the chimp helps him win the Minor League championship in a story that mirrors how all your favorite baseball stars undoubtedly got their starts.

Dunston Checks In (1996)

Dunston Checks In concretely proves that every hotel needs a resident orangutan to cause general mischief and make things more fun. It also makes us want to go get a sexy massage from an ape, which is completely normal.

Every Which Way But Loose (1978)

This action-comedy features what might be the perfect recipe for success — Clint Eastwood on a cross-country road trip with an orangutan. We're really hoping that Dirty Harry himself will star in a long-overdue sequel, especially considering the film still ranks as one of his biggest box office hits ever.

Homeward Bound (1993)

The pets from Homeward Bound traveled from rural Northern California to San Francisco, braving the natural elements to reunite with their human family. In other words, they love their owners a lot more than your pets love you.

Keanu (2016)

If you're ever in the market for a gangsta pet, you'll want to chill with Keanu the kitten. He can roll with the homies, rock a do-rag and look absolutely adorable while doing it.

Andre (1994)

Seals are basically the dogs of the sea, an idea perfectly displayed in Andre. Even better, the titular Andre will live in your house, meaning you don't have to make a bunch of extra trips down to the beach to hang out.

Old Yeller (1957)

Old Yeller as a puppy.
Old Yeller as a puppy.

RIP, Old Yeller. We'll never forget you.

National Best Friend's Day is a day to celebrate all your friends — animals included. And while our list includes some personal favorite animal buddy films, there are plenty more to enjoy. Just remember to show your real-life animal friends some love for the holiday.
