The production of iconic Japanese sci-fi flick Ghost In The Shell is currently going full-steam ahead, with more and more details trickling out through the cracks regarding the epic project.
The live-action take on the classic manga sees Scarlett Johannson delve deep into the post-Cyberpunk dystopia as Motoko Kusanagi alongside a myriad of fantastic actors including Pilou Asbæk, Michael Pitt and French icon Juliette Binoche as Dr. Ouelet. And another name that has just been linked to the hefty anime remake is Rila Fukushima.
For those of you who don't know much about the actress, don't fret — below is everything you need to familiarize yourself with the lady herself ahead of the Ghost In The Shell release in 2017:
1. Rila is a pretty big deal in Japan
While she's currently rapidly branching out into Hollywood, the Tokyo-born actress is already very well-known in Japan, having starred in historical Taiga drama Gunshi Kanbei in 2014 as a character called Omichi.
2. She originally worked as a model agent in Japan, before landing a D&G campaign in 2004 herself
During much of her career on the catwalk, she was known as "the Asian girl with the blonde hair" because of her striking waist-length bleached hair.
3. Fukushima was chosen as Woman of the Year by Vogue Japan in 2013
4. Rila made her feature film debut in The Wolverine where she played deadly assassin Yukio
She admits to reading the comics in preparation for the role and reveals that now she's pretty tough, having trained extensively in sword fighting. So much so, that she once openly admitted in an interview:
"I know how to kick people's asses now!"
5. She absolutely loved working with Hugh Jackman
When asked what it as like to work with the Australian legend, she said:
“The crew people say it’s a really fun chemistry with me and Hugh. Sometimes we keep going, even if we’ve finished the scene. It’s funny. He gave me a lot of improv, so I physically hit back. It’s funny. It’s so much fun to work with him, it’s amazing.”
6. You might also recognize her from Game of Thrones
She appears in Season 5 as Red Priestess in Volantis, in which she preaches to the slaves gathered around her that Daenerys Targaryen is a prophesied savior sent by R'hllor. In the scene, Tyrion Lannister and Varys watch from a distance, before she turns on the former and stares at him intently for mocking her.
7. Rila also portrayed Tatsu Yamashiro/Katana in Season 3 of Arrow
Maseo Yamashiro's wife and Akio Yamashiro's mother plays a Former Mentor of Oliver Queen and Agent of A.R.G.U.S. Although actress Devon Aoki was originally cast in the role, she had to leave due to other work commitments, allowing Rila to step into the role of the badass character.
