Working on a superhero TV show ranks pretty highly on the list of world's most awesome jobs, but behind the scenes of those exhilarating fight sequences, it's not all fun and games. Sometimes, the actors can genuinely hurt themselves, despite the help of stunt doubles who tackle the toughest fight moves on set.
Of all the programs currently airing on TV, CW's Arrow is one of the most action packed, so it might come as no surprise to learn that the show's heroes often fall into harm's way while filming their fight scenes.
Fortunately, the stars of Arrow are also very active on social media, often sharing various mishaps from behind the scenes, so it's easy for us to hear about all the gruesome injuries that happen on set.
1. Is That Even A Real Leg?
After banging his leg while filming on set, Stephen Amell's calf blew up to the size of an extremely painful-looking balloon. Fortunately for us, Stephen chose to share this delightful photo on Twitter, allowing us to all join him in a collective grimace.
At least this happened to Amell and not Grant Gustin. Oliver Queen can still shoot as many arrows as he wants while sitting down, but the Flash would be kind of screwed with an injury like this.
2. Double Trouble
During an interview on the red carpet, star Willa Holland revealed that she was lucky to wear heels still after a nail punctured through a toe on her left foot.
Around the same time, Holland also bruised the heel of her right foot quite badly trying to perform another particularly difficult stunt. Hurting both feet at once is far from ideal for an actress who stars on a superhero show.
Not so Speedy now, eh Willa?
3. Secret Injury
During a panel at WonderCon 2013, the stars of Arrow began to discuss their many on-set injuries, prompting the show's director to quickly try and stop Amell from revealing an injury he received while trying to perform a forbidden stunt.
No specifics were given, but it appears that superheroes do break the law sometimes after all.
4. Even The Stunt Guys Aren't Safe
At the aforementioned Wondercon 2013 panel, actor Paul Blackthorn recalled a time that Stephen punched a stunt guy in the face and broke his nose.
Amell explained that:
Can't argue with that logic! It's not easy being a stunt double, especially if Stephen's around.
5. Jaw Ache
Before he took on Stardust in his WWE SummerSlam match, Amell trained even harder than usual, accidentally taking things too far by hitting his jaw while trying a snatch-pull curl.
The upside of this is that Amell then shared this story on Facebook, complete with a temporary lisp that made the action star somehow appear even more adorable than usual.
Sometimes it's harder to play a crime-fighting vigilante than to actually be one.
The cast of Arrow will hit the set again soon to begin filming Season 5, probably suffering their fair share of injuries before returning to our screens this fall.
