I'm one of the greatest rebel pilots out there, and I secretly faked my death so I could go to a hot dog eating contest. Worth it!

The Shallows just came out, and upon viewing it there were things that this movie actually did right.

Now if you didn't like the trailers, maybe this article could help with your decision to go see it, or to avoid it like the plague. So here are the 4 things that this movie does right.

4. The Character

'The Shallows'
'The Shallows'

Blake Lively is really the only character here. There are some side characters in the film, but for the most part it is just Blake vs. shark. Blake Lively does a good job making you believe that she is scared out of her mind by the shark that is circling her. Also there is a scene in which she has to use knowledge she has learned outside of this scenario to survive (trying not to spoil) which presents her as someone who is smart and capable. She does a good job trying to be smart and tactical in attempting to escape from the shark, and she makes a good job at making you want to root for her.

I would like to do a honorable mention here. It goes to the shark who for at least the first half leading into the second is actually presented as not just being a mindless animal who is just being evil and wants to eat her, but it is presented as an actual animal that is acting upon its nature.

3. The Humor

Yes I know this isn't a movie that you would expect to have humor running through it, but it does. Now this doesn't mean you will be laughing out loud, but the humor is done very well in cutting through the consistent feeling of dread. The humor is very welcomed as it doesn't make you roll your eyes, take you out of the scene, or just keep on coming and make this movie no longer a suspense film.

2. The Suspense/Thrill

Throughout the movie you are in constant suspense as the feeling of dread comes over you just thinking about the shark circling Blake Lively's character. And when it comes to her finding ways to escape your heart will be racing, as you don't know how close the shark really is. You will stay on the edge of your seat throughout the movie, as you are wondering just how she will get out of this.

1. The Scares

When it comes to the scares this movie does it right. Now I'm not a guy that gets scared that easy, usually it happens when the atmosphere is right, and the scares are properly done, and in this movie it is. The jump scares are done well, and the internal scares you feel with this character are there as well. This shark will make you scared to enter its hunting ground ever again.

What did you think about the movie? What were things that you thought it did right or wrong? Sound off in the comments.
