By now most fans have seen the news from Supergirl Executive Producer Andrew Kreisberg that Superman is coming to National City.
"Greg, Ali and I are beyond thrilled to welcome Clark Kent and his slightly-more-famous alter ego to the world of Supergirl. Superman will be appearing in the first two episodes of the new season and we cannot wait to see who next dons the red cape!"
Supergirl Casting Director David Rapaport Casting has all but confirmed this with his recent tweets and retweets of the Superman news.
Who Will Be Cast As Supergirl's Superman?
In an interview with Comicbook.com last year, Kreisberg gave some insight into the casting of Superman:
"If you're going to cast Superman, you've got to cast Superman right! Just like when you think about all the time and effort and energy that's gone into finding the cinematic Superman over the last thirty years."
So who would be right?
Supernatural's Matt Cohen Is a Strong Frontrunner
Matt Cohen will be high on Kreisberg's radar for several reasons:
As an alum of the hit CW series Supernatural, Matt has developed a great relationship with the network. According to his official Twitter he continues this relationship, joining the series regulars nearly every month at Supernatural conventions around the world.
Speaking of Twitter, the hashtag #MattCohenIsSuperman is trending. This is important. Matt doesn't have millions of followers, he has hundreds of thousands. But, they are super followers that are very engaged with him in social media. It's the same strong following he brings from Supernatural, that would benefit a Supergirl series that had to switch to a cheaper shooting location to get a second season approved.
Matt Cohen has been in this position before. He was being considered for the role of Superman in Man Of Steel that, eventually, went to Henry Cavill.
As an actor Matt Cohen has shown versatility in his roles. This is important because this is a role that requires playing two characters. In fact, he has, playing both Young John Winchester and Archangel Michael in Supernatural. A lot of actors mentioned have the jawline to play Superman, but can they also play Clark Kent?
DC Chief Content Officer Geoff Johns was recently chosen to co-run DC Films. This was, in part, because of the success Johns had with DC's brand on television. He wants to stay away from the dark, brooding characters that fans complained about in the DC films Man of Steel and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and stay with characters that connect with the audience. Matt Cohen fits the character mold as good as any actor mentioned for the role.
Who Are DC and CW Going To Cast?
In the end, no one knows who will get the role. Other names mentioned include Tom Welling, Matt Bomer, and even Scott Eastwood. At this point, Kreisberg doesn't even know, though you can bet he has a few favorites and Matt Cohen is sure to be on that short list considering his relationship with CW.
