The Dark Knight. The Caped Crusader. World's Greatest Detective. Although there is a multitude of names he is known by, Batman is often considered to be the quintessential superhero. The protector of the weak and the innocent, the most dedicated fighter against crime, and contrary to many superheroes, most of his crime fighting is extremely localised to Gotham City.

Nonetheless, despite his extremely successful career and experience in protecting Gotham over the years, Batman isn't perfect. Even though he is one of the best combatants in the DC Universe, master of over 127 different types of martial arts, has achieved peak human physical conditions, has an extremely strong willpower, is one of the smartest people in the DC Universe, an expert tactician and and is the World's Greatest Detective, he is not infallible. Here is a list of 4 characters who could beat Batman - either through their combat skills, or by rivalling him intellectually.

1. Black Panther

King T'Challa of Wakanda is one of the best fighters and tacticians in the Marvel universe. Equipped with a suit fully created out of vibranium, the strongest metal on Earth, and with heightened senses, agility, peak human physical strength and durability, the Black Panther is also a master of several different types of martial arts and fighting techniques.

T'Challa is also considered to be amongst the most intellectual and highly knowledgeable people in the Marvel Universe. Being the King of Wakanda, the richest nation on the planet, he has access to the most advanced technology on Earth, and can use it against his foes. Undoubtedly, The Black Panther could prove to be more than a match for the Dark Knight.

2. Daredevil

Ironically, Ben Affleck played Daredevil in 2003's Daredevil, and also plays Batman in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Suicide Squad, and Justice League.

The Devil of Hell's Kitchen is certainly one of the selective bunch who could rival Batman in hand-to-hand combat. Due to his lack of sight, Matt Murdock's other senses function on extraordinarily high levels, and can detect use this gift to fight crime through echolocation (basically tracing the object back to the origin through the sound it produces, which ironically, is also a process used by bats).

Daredevil is also extremely athletic and flexible, thus allowing him to dodge his opponents' attacks and counter them easily. Through his extreme skill in combat and his extraordinary senses, Daredevil could certainly stand up to the likes of Batman, and I don't think anyone will deny that the fight scenes in Netflix's Daredevil are simply exhilarating, and are some of the best ones ever.

3. Deathstroke

The biggest advantage Slade Wilson (no, he is not a Deadpool ripoff, some would say it's the reverse) has over his foes, especially against Batman is that he is willing to do whatever is necessary in order to achieve his goal – even if that means taking a life. Of course, a boost from the Mirakuru serum turning him into a super-soldier doesn't hurt either.

Slade Wilson possesses an enormous amount of strength, endurance, stamina and durability, and can survive in even the most extreme physical conditions. He also has a healing factor allowing him to heal his wounds faster than a normal man.

A former soldier in the army and currently the most famous mercenary and assassin worldwide, he is a master combatant and is trained in the use of various different weapons ranging from rifles, guns, and swords. Deathstroke has gained a (well deserved) reputation for being one of the most dangerous men on the planet.

4. Captain America

And finally, I conclude this list with Captain America. Although there is a common misconception that he possesses superpowers, Captain America, in fact, does not have any superpowers. However, he is at the pinnacle of human fitness, with strength nearing superhuman levels, along with increased agility, durability, and stamina. This physical strength is what allowed him to survive in ice for over 70 years.

With an experience of serving in the US Army during World War II and his trusty vibranium shield with him, Captain America is widely regarding as one of the best hand-to-hand combatants in the Marvel Universe. He is also a highly efficient tactician and strategist, and hence is the leader of the Avengers.

Captain America is also one of the few who have been deemed worthy enough to wield Thor's mighty hammer, Mjolnir. That's saying something. And for what it's worth, Batman himself admitted that Captain America could beat him in a fight.

Nevertheless, it is certain that a fight between any of these characters would have an interesting outcome, and would be one worth watching. Here's hoping for more crossovers!
