*Warning: This post contains spoilers for Mr. Robot Season 1 and some plot lines for Season 2*

In a saturated market, it takes something special to stand out from the crowd. Mr. Robot achieved exactly that, propelled by a protagonist who himself tries so desperately hard to fit in with the crowd, all the while being inherently different.

Telling the story through the psychotic perspective of Elliot (Rami Malek), Mr. Robot is a paranoid commentary on society, as stylish as it is thought provoking, and as grandiose as it is level-headed. The socialist thriller was undeniably one of the best shows of 2015.

Mr. Robot Meet... Mr. Robot

Let's quickly refresh our memory. Elliot — a vigilante computer hacker who suffers from clinical depression and social anxiety — was recruited by "fsociety", a hacking group run by Mr. Robot himself (Christian Slater). Their mission was to take down E Corp (or Evil Corp as Elliot refers to them), and wipe out the world's debt in the process.

Show creator Sam Esmail has pieced together a masterpiece that often leaves more questions than answers. By the end of Season 1, we know that the enigmatic leader, Mr. Robot, was in fact Elliot all along, in the form of a Tylder Durden-esque delusion.

What Now For Season 2?

But such is the depth of the show, even with this big twist, Season 2 enters a world that will arguably be just as, if not more exciting. The plan worked. Debt has been wiped out. How will the world respond? Where does Elliot go now he knows of his delusion?

With just over a month to go until Season 2 is released, let's have an overview of some of the key things we know so far:

1. Mr. Robot Will Return

Christian Slater will return in Season 2, and features heavily in the trailer. Following the end of season reveal, it looks like Elliot will relapse and let his alter ego return with a vengeance (if the gun to the head is anything to go by!).

It'll be interesting to see how Esmail balances this narrative in the knowledge that the audience now know he's a hallucination.

2. There Are A Number Of Additional Recurring Characters

Season 2 will be injected with plenty of new faces (don't worry — I don't trust them either).

  • Grace Gummer and Aasif Mandvi will both play FBI agents who are looking into the hack.
  • Craig Robinson will play an ally of Elliot. On the face of it, this is an interesting choice, as Robinson is synonymous with comedy, but I trust Esmail will have a good use for him.
  • Rapper Joey Bada$$ will also make his acting debut as one of Elliot's friends.

3. The Plot Will Explore The Present And The Past

As well as delving into the consequences of their actions, it looks like the plot will also go back in time, both uncovering what the hell Elliot was up to during his 72 hour blackout, as well as continuing to delve into Elliot's mysterious past.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Esmail revealed that Mr. Robot Season 2 will deviate a lot from the original. When talking about what comes next for Elliot, he used a sci-fi classic to express his point:

“The first act of Star Wars is a lot about set-up and character introductions. The second part is Luke loses his aunt and uncle, and he no longer has a home. He now has to go on this journey to find his place in the world. That’s sort of where Elliot’s at right now.”

Esmail has already said that the overall tone will be a lot darker, and considering Elliot's fragile mental state, it looks like things will only get worse before they get better. Interestingly, Elliot will also be taking an extended hiatus from the world of technology. It won't last long, surely?

4. Sam Esmail Will Direct All Episodes

During Season 1, writer Esmail took control for three episodes, including the intense finale. This time around, he'll take full creative control over the entire season. This means we'll see more of the Esmail special characteristics, such as the fourth wall breaking, jagged and unsettling hallucinations, and overall badass storytelling.

Mr. Robot Season 2 will premiere on 13 July.
