Realism is important to a lot of filmmakers, but it's all too easy for that sense of reality to go out the window when it comes to action films. Thankfully, Steven Spielberg didn't let that happen with his Indiana Jones franchise. The four-film series is filled with religious artifacts, ancient magic and even aliens, yet the filmmaker anchors his movies with the relatable character Indiana Jones — an action hero who serves as a throwback to the nostalgic adventure serials of Spielberg's youth, while maintaining the complexity to appeal to modern audiences.

With that in mind, we're taking a look at the movie moments that made Indiana Jones a relatable action hero, showing how Spielberg was able to create an iconic character that we're eager to see return for more adventures.
