"I don't really understand how this really happened..."
This weekend, 22 year old The Voice and Youtube star, Christina Grimmie, was shot to death after performing a show in Orlando, FL. Her tragic passing sent shockwaves through Hollywood, as Christina was such a talented and kind young woman who's career was on the verge of exploding.
Christina's career was being managed by pop-star Selena Gomez's step-father, Brian Teefey, since she was 14 years old. Gomez and Christina grew close over the years, and Brian even referred to Christina as a second daughter. Many celebrities that knew the young star mourned her untimely death over the weekend, but perhaps no tribute was as moving as Christina's close friend, Selena Gomez's.
Selena Gomez was scheduled to perform in Miami, FL on Saturday night, barely 24 hours after Christina's tragic murder. Out of concerns for her safety, Gomez cancelled all meet and greets for the show (Christina was shot during a meet and greet by a fan), but she did stop and take a moment to remember Grimmie during the concert, and the moment is very powerful. In the video, Selena becomes overcome with emotion during her song "Nobody".
"I'm sorry," she apologizes to the crowd. Selena then goes on to explain her relationship with Grimmie, and with her voice trembling to stay composed, what she loved most about her.
“When she was 14, we met her and my parents and I signed her. One thing about Christina and her family is that she holds her faith so closely to her. And I think it’s not about a religion and it’s not about anything or good deeds. It’s just that she had faith, and I don’t really understand how this really happened, but I would like to dedicate this next song to her.”
A shaken Gomez then goes on to sing a cover on Hillsong United's "Transfiguration", and dedicates the song to Christina. See the moving and tearful video below.
My heart breaks for the family and friends of this sweet, talented young girl. It's clear Christina meant a lot to Selena, and her life ended much too soon in a senseless tragedy.
Christina Grimmie rose to fame on YouTube in 2012, and then won 3rd place on season 6 of The Voice in 2014. Watch the blind audition that kicked off her impressive journey on The Voice.
After this success, Gomez's step-father signed her. Grimmie was also signed to a label, and was planning on recording a studio album soon with a release late this year. She was shot 3 times on Friday night in Orlando during a meet and greet with what police elude to as a "deranged fan". The attacker was tackled by her brother after firing the shots, but took his own life in the struggle. Christina succumbed to her injuries a few hours later in the hospital.
This, along with the tragic attack on a club in Orlando early Sunday morning, has made for a heartbreaking weekend full of tragedy.
RIP Christina Grimmie and the victims of the terrorist attack in Orlando. Our hearts are with the families and victims.
