When Guardians of the Galaxy came out in 2014, it was an unexpected success considering how little known its heroes were, even to the average comic book fan. Sure, everyone's heard of Captain America, but did you really know who Peter Quill was before James Gunn and Chris Pratt brought him to life with a heavy dose of '80s music?

But the sequel has long been underway, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is set for release on May 5, 2017. While it's not going to be R-rated, the beloved characters and the antihero vibe they set up long before Deadpool contribute to making the second movie highly anticipated by fans. Still, what is actually going to happen in Vol. 2 has been kept tightly under wraps by the cast and crew, save for a few hints here and there — plus some very cryptic storyboards shared by director James Gunn on his Facebook page.

This fan theory might put all of our speculation to rest, however, finally identifying who the mysterious cast members could be playing, and what that means for the plot. So stop reading now if you don't want any potential spoilers for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2!

Is Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 Bringing Back The Original Guardians?

It all started when Reddit user SuperCoenBros fished out a comment on an article over at Birth.Movies.Death, where readers were trying to figure out who the newly cast Sharon Stone was playing. Remember, she revealed to AARP that her secret power was heat. Add to that one of the insanely detailed sketches shared by Gunn as a part of his series, and you've got quite a few clues regarding her character.

Could she be... Nikki? In the comics, Nikki is a superhero who was engineered to live on Mercury, which means she has to power to resist UV radiations and constantly has a little halo of flames around her head.

But most importantly, she was a member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy! That's right, the Guardians as we know them from the movie are only the second team. The first team appeared in the comics in 1969, while the second one was only created in 2008.

If you look at the original Guardians and the members of the cast that haven't yet disclosed who they're playing, it's easy to connect the dots quite quickly:

Sylvester Stallone / Charlie-27 from Marvel Comics

Sylvester Stallone would be incredible as the super-bulk Charlie-27, a soldier whose birth on Jupiter gave him a muscle mass about eleven times as big as an average human.

Kurt Russell / Starhawk from Marvel Comics

We've also heard several rumors that Kurt Russell would play Star-Lord's father, but that the storyline of the movie would diverge from the comics — so, no J'son. Could it be Starhawk, who just so happens to have been a member of the original Guardians of the Galaxy? It gets even more interesting when you realize that Starhawk is the son of Kismet, a.k.a. Paragon, Her, or Ayesha, and that she might just be the villain of Vol. 2 played by Elizabeth Debicki.

Which means that our Peter Quill would on the one hand meet his heroes of the '80s, but on the other he'd have to fight his very own grandma!

Add Yondu, who we've already been introduced to in Vol. 1, and we're only missing Vance Astro and Martinex. Who would have thought our crushed hopes in 2014 to see Vance Astro on the big screen would actually become relevant again?

All in all, what's so exciting about this is that it would mean James Gunn used the success story of his first Guardians movie to dig out even more obscure comic book characters and introduce them to the general public — and they fit perfectly with Peter Quill's unconditional love for all things '80s.

Do you think this theory holds up? Which comic book characters would you like to see in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?
