After watching him as zombie-hunter Daryl Dixon for years, audiences finally got a chance to get to know the man behind Daryl in the premiere episode of his new AMC series, Ride With Norman Reedus.
The premise of the show is pretty simple: Each week Reedus has a new guest accompany him, and the two ride their bikes through various locations and have an adventure along the way. For the first episode Norman picks up London-born, New Zealand-raised biker Imogen Lehtonen to ride the Pacific Coast Highway, or PCH.
There were a ton of fun moments throughout the episode, and it definitely proved right from the start that it's not just a show for motorbike fanatics (though motorbike fanatics will no doubt love it). Take a look below at all the highlights from first episode of Ride With Norman Reedus and be sure to let me know in the comments if you'll be riding with Norman next week.
Warning: Spoilers ahead.
While Norman starts out his journey on a Ducati Hypermotard 939, he soon trades that sucker in for Roland Sands's BMW R Nine T. Meanwhile, Imogen Lehtonen takes out a custom Harley Davison Dyna T-Sport. Even if the names mean nothing to you, you're surely able to appreciate that these bikes are some nice pieces of equipment — if only because of the look of pure joy on Norman's face.
But aside from the bikes the pair actually ride, Norman and company also stop in a couple bike shops to check out what's on offer. The episode starts out at Roland Sands custom design shop before heading to Zero Motorcycles (an electric motorcycle company) later in the episode.
While you might not have heard of Imogen Lehtonen, you've definitely seen her family's wares. Lehtonen's aunt and uncle started The Great Frog and invented the skull ring more than 40 years ago, and after starting an LA branch, Lehtonen also works as a jewelry designer for the company.
Over the coming weeks Reedus is going to ride with guests including Peter Fonda, Robert Rodriguez and Balthazar Getty.
In a show about riding the open road, you better hope there's going to be some great scenery, and Episode 1 did not disappoint. Traveling along the PCH, Reedus even fills us in on some of the history of the road, including that when it opened in the late 1920s as part of the Roosevelt Highway it was the first road to link the Mexican and Canadian boarders.
The Norman Reedus life tales
Of course, some of the main attractions of Ride With Norman Reedus are all the little facts and stories the audience gets to hear from the man himself along the course of the journey. In Episode 1 we briefly hear about how Reedus became an actor after being in the right place at the right time at the now-closed pizza joint Damiano Mr. Pizza. You can be sure we'll get many more little Reedus insights throughout the remain five episodes of the series.
From sleeping in an Airstream to riding dune buggies and checking out the spooky abandoned Nitt Witt Ridge in Cambria, Episode 1 of Ride With Norman Reedus looked into some awesome places, and will definitely make you want to stop at a few of the places should you ever find yourself traveling the PCH.
The final destination
After traveling the PCH and exploring all that the journey has to offer, Norman and Imogen finally make it to the Re-Cycle Garage to appear on an episode of the Motorcycle and Misfits Podcast. Throughout the podcast interview we get to hear what bike Norman thinks is the best for the zombie apocalypse (an electric one with a solar panel on the back) and what type of motorcycle trips are the best (spontaneous ones) before one final ride with the Misfits gang.
Ride with Norman Reedus returns to AMC with Episode 2 on Sunday, June 19
