We may have while before Shadowhunters Season 2 hits our screens, but myself and billions of other fans are already super excited! It'll be a while before the highly anticipated second season hits our screens (and Netflix) sometime in January 2017, so until then all we can do is (im)patiently wait. To tide us over until we see what's become of Valentine & Jace, Magnus & Alec, and Clary and the rest of the gang, here are the top 10 things we hope to see for Season 2!
1.Villainous Villain Valentine
Of freaking course we're all dying for our Villainous Valentine fix, but unlike the first season, he's no longer in search of The Mortal Cup, and no longer as vulnerable as he once was. No; when we catch up with Valentine in Season 2, he likely have an entire army behind him (well, one bigger than the one he had at the end of season 1 probably!). Plus, of course, he'll have a guilt-ridden Jace by his side.
There's no telling where Season 2 will pick up - immediately after, a few days after or even a few weeks after the events of the Season 1 finale. Regardless, here's hoping we kick the season off with a bang, and some villainy!
2. The Institute!
Season 1 showed us a very different Institute from the one we'd seen in The Mortal Instruments movie, and with it came a hell of a lot of tech! Tons of fans were a little surprised at just how high-tech The Institute was, seeing as how the books really never painted it this way.
Full to bursting with hidden doors, rune-protected compartments in the floor and high-tech tracking equipment, The Institute NEEDS to be shown much more significantly for Season 2. We simply can't do without it! Jace and Valentine are on the loose AND they have The Mortal Cup. If the gang want to find them, their only hope most likely lies in the high-tech equipment at The Institute!
3. Magnus (+Alec!)
Season 1 saw the all-powerful glitter-clad High Warlock of Brooklyn Magnus Bane wow us with his "Warlock Tracking" which is allegedly "stronger" than Parabatai tracking. We've seen Magnus use his power many times, but could he possibly be the key to finding Jace & Valentine?
I mean, if we're being honest here, portals are kind of his thing. He probably knows them like the back of his jewel-encrusted hand. Surely Magnus Bae- sorry, Bane- can work a little more magic for us in the new season?
Adding to that, of course, we come to the biggest (and let's be real, most important!) ship of the show: Malec. These two precious beauties have FINALLY admitted their feelings for one another, and did so in dramatic fashion. Waltzing in (as he does) halfway through Alec's wedding to the badass Queen Lydia Branwell, Magnus awaited the moment Alec would finally admit to the feelings he'd been so obviously harbouring for Magnus all season. He didn't do so in quite the way we would've thought, and rather than just tell Magnus he likes (soon to be loves!) him and admit to everyone that is he gay, he opted to show them all with a show-stopping kiss!
Of course the lads agreed to take things slow after this, and decided to skip the crazy declarations of together forever blood oaths. But it'll definitely be interesting to see where they're both at in the new season, both individually and in their newfound relationship. With everything that'll be going on this season, will there even be time for a Malec date-night?
4. Girl Power!
This point pertains to girl-crush and all round babe, Isabelle Lightwood - played by bombshell and girl crush Emeraude Toubia - and newbie Shadowunter, Clary Fray - played by the badass red-headed beauty known as Kat McNamara. The first season saw Clary throw herself head first into this entirely new world, battling all manner of demons and threats in an effort to get her mother back. Whilst we're super proud of her, the fight isn't quite over just yet. She may learn quickly, but she simply hasn't had the same training as Alec, Izzy and Jace, who've trained to be Shadowhunters their entire lives. And she's going to need all the help she can get, if they're going after Valentine.
In the books there's a sort of bitchy rivalry between Izzy and Clary, as they're somewhat threatened by each other.
But what I like about the show, is that rather than pit their two lead females against one another, they actually allowed them to bond, and develop a friendship. If you think about it, this seems more natural than an unnecessary rivalry. Izzy- being the kick-ass Shadowhunter that she is, and an absolute beast with a whip when she needs to be- could be the perfect mentor for Clary. She could easily train with her, and help her reach her full Shadowhunter potential. Clary already has the drive and determination, all she needs now are the physical skills. Of course, now that Mama Fray is alive and well, she is also technically free to show Clary a few moves. Here's hoping that together, the female characters can whip Clary into tip-top Shadowhunter shape,, and give her the skills necessary to fulfil her true potential.
5. Miss Lydia Branwell - Come Through Queen!
I'll admit that like a significant portion of Shadowhunters fans, when Lydia first entered the show, I did not like her at all. Like, AT ALL. She waltzed in with the intention of screwing up the biggest TMI ship in the history of ships, and I couldn't stand it!
But when the episode entitled "Malec" aired, I realised something. Lydia's presence at The Institute, her rules, regulations and her entire being, were not and are not a threat to Alec. She didn't stroll into The Institute, disguised as Valentine, to "steal" Alec from Magnus. She came to do her job, and was damn good at it. She followed the rules, and was penalised for it, because deep down in our hearts we were worried. A significant portion of us are Malec trash, and the idea that Lydia - a character NOT in the books, a character's whose motives and final destination we couldn't predict - was now in charge of The Institute, and engaged to Alec, nearly killed us.
The fact remains that Lydia Branwell is one fierce-ass Shadowhunter, with a painful past, and a solemn looking future. She lost her first fiance, and as a result has built up a cold exterior, harsh edge, and somewhat brash nature.
When Magnus crashed the wedding, barely a look of shock passed over Lydia's face. Dressed in her finery, her entire wedding essentially a Pinterest Dream, she quietly stood back, and allowed Alec to have his moment with Magnus. She made plans to go back to Idris, all the while quietly leaving everyone else to have their happy ever after, whilst she suffered. Again.
Lydia freaking Branwell, I hope to god hope to god we haven't seen the last of you. To amend Jace's words, you will always have a place here.
6. Meliorn (+Izzy!)
Naturally, we all want to see more of the terribly handsome, dark-haired Seelie, Meliorn. Whilst a few of us know more about his book counterpart, the show has only just begun to touch upon his character, and including more of him in the second season, would mean...
A) More Jade Houssane
B) Perhaps a little more insight into the Seelies as a people?
Of course, his relationship with Izzy is also something we'd love to see more of, as with the exception of the main gang, we've not seen Isabelle make any connections with anyone else. I guess it also helps that Meliorn and Izzy make a ridiculously attractive couple, so here's hoping Meliorn graces our screens in season 2!
New Showrunners - New Beginninngs!
Season 2 promises all new beginnings, as Shadowhunters welcomes Todd Slavkin & Darren Swimmer as the new showrunners. After Ed Decter's sudden departure from the series, Slavkin and Swimmer now take over with help from Matt Hastings, who signs on as Executive Producer / Series Director. With shows like the long-running Smallville and The Vampire Diaries spin-off The Originals under their shared belt, Season 2 of Shadowhunters should be chock-full of greatness!
