You may have seen him appear as a walker back in Season 5 of The Walking Dead, but now Anthrax guitarist Scott Ian is back for more walker action, and this time it's Game of Thrones style!
In the latest episode of Bloodworks, his Nerdist YouTube series, Ian talks to Game of Thrones' prosthetic makeup designer Barrie Gower and learns exactly how the terrifying mythical White Walkers are brought to life before being made into one himself. Take a look at the video and then check out the highlights below:
First up we get a look at the prosthetics and costuming used for the White Walkers. Gower shares all sorts of interesting details about turning a regular extra into a White Walker, including showing parts of the Night King's costume:
He then explained the enormous undertaking that was the Season 5 episode "Hardhome." Given that "Hardhome" used "hundreds and hundreds" of extras —four of whom were the members of Mastodon, who appeared as wildlings! — and "an unprecedented amount of stuntmen," Gower says that even he was surprised that out of the chaos emerged one of the the most impressive sequences seen in the entire series.
Gower also told Ian that "Hardhome" took four weeks in total to film and included about 30 actors in full "hero makeup" (full-blown prosthetics that allows them to be used for closeup camera action) as well as around 45 extras in silicon masks for the background.

But back to the interview. It was Ian's time to be transformed into "the first American White Walker!"
Finally, after a visit to lens technician Stephanie Doherty, Ian is ready to go out and wreak havoc. He even got to keep the beard!
Game of Thrones returns to HBO with Episode 9 "Battle of the Bastards" on June 19.
