Ogre fans are in celebration today after the news that Comcast may be working to revive the beloved Shrek franchise, following its acquisition of DreamWorks Animation.
With Deadline reporting that Comcast could be looking to release four animated films per year (they currently aim to release a maximum of two) from DreamWorks, it seems as though we should look forward to at least a few more Shrek movies (and hopefully even the long-awaited Puss in Boots 2!)
So, with future Shrek films to look forward to, audiences can no doubt expect their favorite characters to return, but what about the new ones? Granted, a lot of fairytale and fable characters have already appeared in the franchise, but there's always more to be added! Take a look below at some fairytale characters who I think would make a great addition to future Shrek films, and be sure to let me know which character you'd love to see:
Bluebeard is a rather dark character who comes from a French folktale. The story goes: After many of Bluebeard's wives mysteriously go missing, he marries another and takes her to live in his castle. Soon, Bluebeard has to go away and he leaves his new wife the keys to the castle. He allows her entrance to all rooms except one, which she is expressly forbidden. However, after her curiosity gets the better of her, she enters and finds the corpses of his missing wives. Bluebeard then returns home unexpectedly and learns what the wife has done. Just as he prepares to kill her, her family arrives and kills Bluebeard. Afterwards, the wife inherits Bluebeard's fortune, buries the wives and (despite her ordeal) lives happily ever after.
Even though Bluebeard is quite a grim tale, I have no doubt that DreamWorks could adapt this into a great character for Shrek, because let's face it, he'd be a great villain.
Everyone knows the tale of Goldilocks sneaking into the three bears' cottage and stealing their porridge before falling asleep in baby bear's bed. While the three bears have already appearance in Shrek (after being captured by Lord Farquaad's troops), we have not yet seen Goldilocks in the film franchise. Surely Goldi would be a fantastic character to have appear, and I'm a little surprised she hasn't already.
The Wind in the Willows gang
What better group to make an appearance than the four animals of The Wind in the Willows! Mole, Ratty, Mr. Toad and Mr. Badger are all very different characters who could liven up the Shrek franchise individually or as a group. Mole is mild-mannered and a homebody, Ratty is very cultured and also mischievous, Mr. Toad is prone to obsessions (and able fund them with his great wealth) and Mr. Badger is the grump of the group. What a team!
Jack Sprat and his wife
I imagine that Jack Sprat and his wife could be part of a quick cameo appearance in an upcoming film, perhaps in a tavern or inn scene. In case you're unfamiliar with Jack Sprat the nursery rhyme, it goes:
Jack Sprat could eat no fat.
His wife could eat no lean.
And so between them both, you see,
They licked the platter clean.
Little Bo Peep
Most people will be familiar with Little Bo Peep from her famous appearances in the Toy Story franchise, but that doesn't mean this famous fairytale character couldn't also appear in the Shrek films (with her sheep trailing behind her, of course).
