After first showing interest in joining the billion dollar Fast & Furious franchise back in 2015, Helen Mirren has now confirmed that she will indeed be playing a role in the highly anticipated Fast 8 which is set to hit theaters in Summer 2017.
Back in April 2015 the actress said the following; “My great ambition is to be in a Fast and Furious movie. I so want to be a mad driver in a Fast and Furious movie. My claim to fame is I always do my own driving – I was on Top Gear, and I did [my lap] in a very good time. I keep putting it out there, and they never ask me. I’ll be in Fast and Furious 8,” she teased. “I have to say Vin Diesel is brilliant. I love Vin Diesel. He’s a great guy, smart – I love him. It’s partly because of him I’d like to be in one, but also the driving.”
“I want to be making film and theater, but film is particularly relevant. I like it to be serious. Of course, having said that I’m about to do Fast and Furious 8,” the actress said during an interview with Elle whilst promoting her new drama Eye In The Sky. “But that’s for the fun of it. So maybe that’s what I want as well, some fun and some relevant, serious, important movies.”
The Academy Award winner has shown some interest in the franchise for a while, even confirming her desire to join the series on The Graham Norton Show.
Vin Diesel was more than happy about the actresses interest in joining the film.
“I’ve always rather loved driving. I said, ‘I’ll be in it, but only if I’m allowed to drive if I do drive in it.’ But we’ll see. We’ll see how it transpires,” Mirren said. “I love big, fun movies–as long as they’re well made and they’ve got good scripts. That’s the most important thing.”
The eight film in the Fast & Furious franchise is directed by Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray and stars Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Michelle Rodriquez and Charlize Theron.
Could Mirren be playing a villain; the matriarch of the Shaw family as Diesel suggests in the interview from last year. Or will she be playing a role similar to Kurt Russell as an ally of the crew? Sound off in the comments with your thoughts or tell me on Twitter @JamesPorter97
