After months of speculation over whether Jena Malone would be playing Barbara Gordon or Carrie Kelley in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, fans were disappointed to learn that her scenes had been cut from the movie. And they were even more disappointed when the Ultimate Edition trailer was released, teasing a quick cameo from Malone in a role that didn't fit into any kind of heroic role.

But there is hope! The name for Malone's character has been revealed, and her role might just have a greater importance to the DCEU that the Ultimate Edition trailer suggested.

In the trailer, Jena Malone's character is shown talking to Lois Lane. We don't know what the context of the conversation is, but it seems to have something to do with the "desert incident" which prompts the tide of public opinion to turn against Superman. Malone's character seems to be a lot more cynical than Lois, which is intriguing.

"This is what makes you such a good reporter — stuff like this still shocks you."

At first glance Malone seemed to be playing another Daily Planet reporter, but now we know this isn't the case.

Jenet Klyburn: S.T.A.R. Labs Scientist

According to the DCEU Instagram page, Malone is playing Jenet Klyburn, a leading scientist at S.T.A.R. labs.

Although Jenet is a minor character from DC's history (she has only had 42 appearances in total), she's nonetheless pretty interesting — Jenet has worked with Superman in the past, and her work at S.T.A.R. Labs has saved the day on more than one occasion. In the DCEU, she could provide a vital link between Batman v Superman and Cyborg or The Flash.

S.T.A.R. Labs plays a huge part in both the origin of Victor Stone as Cyborg. Victor's father is a technician at S.T.A.R. Labs, and he uses the facility to save his son's life, turning him into Cyborg in the process as we saw in Batman v Superman.

It's not much of a stretch to consider that Jenet could appear in Cyborg as one of the people working at S.T.A.R. Labs, either as a cameo or in a larger role. Although we only caught a fleeting glimpse of her character in the Ultimate Edition trailer, her remark to Lois does set her up to be world weary.

Connecting The DCEU

Thanks to a copy of the Ultimate Edition which leaked online, spoilers are already seeping onto the net about the scenes we haven't yet seen. According to Reddit, Jenet helps Lois identify the nature of the bullet — that this is actually an experimental model, which leads Lois to investigate Lex Luthor.

With this context we can understand Jenet's remark, and it seems as though she might have already suspected Lex, or another villain, of being involved in the incident. This leads us to wonder whether she's gone up against villains before, or if something in the past has made her believe the impossible.

Which brings us to the other hero connected to S.T.A.R. Labs: Barry Allen a.k.a. the Flash. Batman v Superman established that Barry already has his powers, but he's laying low for the moment. It's unclear whether he's working as a CSI or if he's in hiding, but S.T.A.R. Labs has played a major role in Barry's story in the CW show, meaning the movie could follow suit.

With Cyborg coming out first, it seems more likely that Jenet will be used to connect this film to Batman v Superman, establishing her as a colleague of Silas Stone, perhaps one who helped in the creation of Cyborg.

Considering that Cyborg was created using a Mother Box, he already has a link to Darkseid, and after Dawn of Justice we were left wondering how S.T.A.R. Labs came to possess alien technology in the first place. Perhaps Jenet had something to do with this — after all, using secret alien technology created by a terrifying race would probably make experimental bullets seem less shocking.

Do you think Jenet Klyburn will appear in Cyborg or Flash?
