While horror is more notable for its never ending sequels, there are still a fair number of spin-offs that fans think of fondly. Sometimes we just love one character or element of a horror movie or show so much that we need more, which is how delightfully deranged things such as the Crypt Keeper rap happen! Check out five memorable horror spin-offs that might have inflamed critical opinion but were adored by horror fans the world over.
1. The Alfred Hitchcock Hour (1962–1965)
Original: Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955–1965)
The maestro of horror himself truly established his horror credentials with the widespread acclaim for Psycho in 1960. His TV show Alfred Hitchcock Presents was so popular it gained a spin-off, The Alfred Hitchcock Hour, even before the original ended. Alfred Hitchcock Presents was resurrected 20 years after its original run between 1985 and 1989.
2. Freddy Vs. Jason (2003)
Original: A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984), Friday the 13th (1980)
With Robert Englund as Freddy and a number of memorable deaths, Freddy vs. Jason was a delightfully campy union of two horror icons, smeared with blood and dripping with dark humor. Fans have been clamoring for a Freddy vs. Jason 2 ever since.
3. The Scorpion King (2002)
Original: The Mummy (1999)
While no longer horror in its modern incarnation, The Mummy movies are inspired by early offerings from Universal and Hammer Horror, keeping the admittedly over-the-top modern Mummy movies within a valuable horror tradition. Besides, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson with a bad CGI scorpion stinger is always a fun time.
4. Annabelle (2014)
Original: The Conjuring (2013)
It took less than a year for Annabelle, the creepy possessed doll from The Conjuring, to get her own movie. Clearly, it's unwise to say no to a freaky doll imbued with the soul of a vengeful, criminally insane woman.
5. The Nun (Forthcoming)
Original: The Conjuring 2 (2016)
Announced only a short few days after the theatrical release of The Conjuring 2, the Warrens' latest adversary has secured her own feature in The Nun. There's a grand horror tradition of evil nuns in horror movies, so hopefully The Nun can do justice to their infernal legacy.
The Conjuring 2 is currently in theaters and is smashing the box office.
