After weeks of speculation, BBC America has finally revealed what's to become of its hit cult series Orphan Black. The show, which stars Tatiana Maslany, aired its gut-wrenching pilot in 2013 and has since become one of the most celebrated and beloved shows on TV. Which makes this announcement, even with its glimmer of a silver lining, all that much harder to take.
Take a deep breath, super fans. It appears that now, after four tempestuous, mesmerizing and heartbreaking seasons, Orphan Black has been renewed. But for a fifth and final season only.
The announcement comes from co-creators John Fawcett and Graeme Manson (above), who with love and adoration for the fans, released the following statement:
We are excited to deliver an epic conclusion to the tale of Sarah and her clone sisters. The past four seasons have been a phenomenal adventure and we are eternally grateful to our loyal fans who have loved the twists and thrills of our weird little show. We are thankful to our partners at Temple Street, and to BBC America and Space for their support and giving us the opportunity to end on a high.
Orphan Black, the show that arguably helped put BBC America on the Emmys most watched list, will take its final bow with the jaw-dropping drama, unexpected hilarity, and tear-jerking moments fans have come to expect. The show's undying legacy, led by the incredible Maslany, is a credit to the ensemble cast. Without the likes of Jordan Gavaris (Felix), Maria Doyle Kennedy (Mrs. S), Evelyne Brochu (Delphine) and Skyler Wexler (Kira), we wouldn't have had the exciting, enticing experience the show — besting all others in its time slot — has gifted us with for four years.
Following the news of the show's impending finish, BBC America president Sarah Barnett had this to say in a statement:
Orphan Black is a thrilling, genre-bending ride that has captured our fans’ imaginations and hearts like no other show. Our genius team of actors, writers and producers have, time after time, taken us to a place of awe, delight and utter shock and surprise. Tatiana has been and continues to be a complete revelation, hers is one of the most remarkable performances on television, and she is joined by an extraordinary cast. We can’t wait to take our incredibly passionate audience on one final gobsmacking clone adventure.
Maslany, who's received an Emmy nomination for her performance(s) in Orphan Black, has also been nominated for a People's Choice Award and a Golden Globe .
