Fatherhood can be difficult in Hollywood, what with demanding filming schedules taking up your time and dangerous paparazzi forever on your tail. But some celebrity dads have got it down. On screen, they bring our favorite superheroes to life and take down the most evil of villains, while off screen they're just trying to chase the boogie monster from under the bed.
So, what makes a superhero dad? Well, look no further than these guys. I mean, Ben Affleck wore the Batman suit to his son's fourth birthday — I don't even remember my fourth birthday.
From Chris Pratt to Ryan Reynolds, these superhero dads always manage to put family first, and don't let Hollywood take them away from being a real-life superhero to the little humans who need them most.
1. Channing Tatum
Once voted the Sexiest Man Alive and now our future X-Man Gambit, Channing Tatum is one proud papa who doesn't take one crazy moment for granted. He and his wife Jenna Dewan have 3-year-old daughter Everly together. Tatum admitted to People magazine that becoming a father changed his priorities in life:
"Having a family and a little girl, it really makes things super clear."
"The first thing I do when I wake up in the morning? I check to see if my daughter is still sleeping."
2. Ryan Reynolds
Deadpool is a bit of a softy when it comes to his baby girl, 18-month-old James. Ryan Reynolds and his wife Blake Lively welcomed their only child into the world in December 2014 and seem to have spent all their time since her birth live-tweeting her life. His tweets alone make him father of the year — see for yourself:
3. Chris Hemsworth
Thor has one weakness, and it's his children. Chris Hemsworth and his wife Elsa Pataky have three children together: 4-year-old India Rose and twin sons Sasha and Tristan, aged 2. Chris is preparing to film Thor: Ragnarok, but more than anything, he relishes his role as doting dad, telling E! News:
"It makes you less selfish, because it's no longer about you. It can't be. It's about someone else, which is refreshing. It's nice to not spend all your time thinking about your own problems and garbage up there and I just have so much fun doing it. It's the best."
4. Stephen Amell
The CW's Arrow actor is one of the most dedicated and open celebrity dads on social media, sharing pictures and videos galore. Stephen Amell's Snapchat is full of silly filter versions of his 2-year-old daughter, Mavi, while his Facebook and Instagram show off the adorable little girl's spunky side.
He's married to former America's Next Top Model contestant Cassandra Jean, and Amell has said being a dad does influence the roles he chooses in Hollywood.
5. Robert Downey Jr.
While Iron Man is considered the father figure of the Avengers, in real life he's a father of three to his 22-year-old son Indio, and his kids with wife Susan: son Exton, 4, and 1-year-old daughter Avri. RDJ credits being a father for keeping him sober and living the good life, sharing with Extra:
“It’s always great to be a dad no matter where you’re at or what else is going on… life now is I’m either working or I’m with him, I’m not like 20-something and trying to party or hang out with my buddies or get laid or anything.”
6. Anthony Mackie
The Avengers' Falcon takes his children's safety and privacy very seriously, and usually shelters them from the limelight and glare of Hollywood. So much so that he and his wife, Sheletta Chapital, welcomed their third child just last year — much to the surprise of the press. He's often joked about how his growing family makes everything more of a challenge, especially traveling.
7. Ben Affleck
Our newly cowled Batman is more than just a caped crusader in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, but a doting dad as well. Though he and his wife, Jennifer Garner, have called it quits, she still praises her estranged husband as an amazing father to their three children: 10-year-old Violet, 7-year-old Seraphina, and Samuel, aged 4. Bennifer tend to try to keep their kids out of the spotlight and away from prying eyes.
In March, Affleck dressed in his full Batman costume for his son's birthday party, and Garner called it the "best dad moment in history!" I mean, imagine this guy at your superhero birthday party:
8. Chris Pratt
Star-Lord's road to fatherhood wasn't an easy one. The Guardians of the Galaxy star has revealed that Jack, his 3-year-old son with wife Anna Farris, was born prematurely and nearly didn't survive. This had a profound effect on the actor and the kind of father he wanted to be. Pratt definitely stands out as one of Hollywood's biggest family men.
Chris said in his speech for the March of Dimes event:
"I made promises in that moment about what kind of dad I wanted to be and I just prayed that he'd live long enough that I could keep them. I've done all kinds of cool things as an actor — I've jumped out of helicopters and done some daring stunts and played baseball in a professional stadium, but none of it means anything compared to being somebody's daddy."
It must be pretty cool to know your dad is Star-Lord or Iron Man and get to hang out with them every day. But what makes these celeb dads superheroes isn't the characters they play on screen, it's how dedicated they are to their kids and families.
It's clear every single one of these superhero dads loves their children and wants the world to know it. Hopefully they get the Father's Day they deserve — happy Father's Day, you guys!
