Us musical theater fans rejoiced when we learned that an adaptation of the book-turned-Broadway-hit Wicked was in the works.

It's been a long time coming. Good news is, now we finally know the official release date for Universal's take on the magical musical Wicked. Bad news is, we'll have to wait until December 2019.

Having been in talks to require the rights since 2004, the news felt long overdue when Universal announced back in 2012 that it would be making the movie. It wasn't until 2015 that producer Marc Platt confirmed the ball was officially rolling.

While the filmmakers didn't quite hit the target for a 2016 release, we're just happy to know that a Wicked movie is really, truly in the works. Platt, director Stephen Daldry (Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close), writer Winnie Holzman (My So-Called Life) and composer-lyricist Stephen Schwartz (Godspell) — the latter two of who worked on the original Broadway production — are finally ready to bring us the musical movie of our dreams.

Based on the 1995 novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West by Gregory Maguire, Wicked has quickly become one of the most popular musical plays in recent history.

Since the show opened in 2003 starring Idina Menzel (Frozen) and Kristin Chenoweth (Pushing Daisies), scores of fans have become obsessed with the alternate telling of the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz starring Judy Garland. Earlier this year, Wicked became the musical that reached $1 billion at the Broadway box office faster than any other title.

Wicked will be released in theaters on December 20, 2019.
