News on the upcoming Alien: Covenant film is coming thick and fast. From uniforms to flamethrowers, and even interesting family theories; now we get our first official look at Michael Fassbender's returning character of David. 20th Century Fox released an on-set image of the Irish actor, alongside film's director Ridley Scott. Most interestingly the caption reads "Creator.Creation", a nod to Fassbender's role as android David in prequel film Prometheus.
We have known for a long time that David would be back, but this is our first chance to see Fassbender on set, arguably with the 'daddy' of the franchise. The synopsis for Covenant reads:
Set as the second chapter in a prequel trilogy that began with Prometheus, Alien: Covenant connects directly to Ridley Scott’s 1979 seminal work of science fiction. It begins with the colony ship Covenant, bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There, the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but is actually a dark, dangerous world — whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition.
Scott also confirmed that Fassbender would be playing two roles in the upcoming Prometheus sequel, so could the snap we see actually be of 'other' David? Notice that he has ditched the synthetic's signature golden locks in favour of the brunette look; however, this could just be a case of needing his roots doing. Another theory is that David could be the franchise's new Lance Henriksen. Henriksen played android 'Bishop' in Aliens, before returning as various, real-life, members of the Weyland family in Alien3 and Alien vs. Predator. In Alien3 we find out that the Bishop android was modelled on Charles Bishop Weyland, the founder of the company from AvP. So, could David be modelled on a real-life person? In Prometheus Guy Pearce's Peter Weyland said David was the closest thing he had to a son, whilst it was unconfirmed if Pearce's Weyland is any connection to the rest of the clan, it wouldn't be a real Alien film without someone from the company turning up!
David (if that is really him) looks in a lot better shape than when we left him at the end of Prometheus. The decapitated head of David was last seen flying alongside Dr. Elizabeth Shaw (Noomi Rapace) to the Engineer's homeworld, presumably where Covenant will somehow pick up. Shortly after Prometheus, it was confirmed that Fassbender would return for a sequel, but that Rapace would not reprise her role as the titular heroine. Nowadays it is rumoured that Rapace WILL return as Shaw, but only in a minor part. Given the synopsis's sentence, "whose sole inhabitant is the “synthetic” David", things don't look too good for Dr. Shaw!
Interestingly, note the style of helmet in the picture! By the looks of it, we are ditching the Jetsons-esque space bubbles from Prometheus, in favour of a more 'classic' 1979 Alien helmet. As we move closer to tying the 'Prometheus trilogy' into Scott's original work, it makes sense that the films borrow ideas from the first Alien. All we need now is a computer called 'Mother' and we are all set to go! Scott is certainly keeping us in suspense as he drip, drip, drips us images like alien acid burning through the hull!
Filming is currently taking place in Sydney, Australia, with an estimated release of Alien: Covenant in October 2017.
