It's with a sad heart that I write this news: Actor Anton Yelchin is dead at age 27. The actor was killed early this morning in a freak accident at his home in San Fernando Valley.

Yelchin's friends became worried when he missed a scheduled rehearsal and went to the actor's home to check on him. They found him pinned between his own car and brick mailbox, which itself was attached to the home's security gate. The engine was running and car in neutral on the steep incline, but investigators are unclear why Yelchin got out of his car in the first place. The preliminary reports stated he died of head and chest injuries.

Yelchin, who was best known for his role as Chekov in the Star Trek reboot, Kyle Reese in Terminator: Salvation, and Charley Brewster in the Fright Night remake, was by all accounts a tremendously gifted actor. More than that, he is being remembered as an incredibly kind individual, with tributes pouring in across social media from fellow actors and actresses.

Born in Saint Petersberg (then Leningrad), Russia to famous ice skaters Irina and Victor Yelchin, the family moved to the United States in 1989 when Anton was just a baby. He became interested in acting while he was still a small child, and his parents encouraged him to pursue his passion. His first role was an episode of ER at age 10, but his breakthrough role was a year later when he starred opposite Anthony Hopkins in Hearts in Atlantis.

Yelchin had most recently appeared in the critically acclaimed Green Room opposite Patrick Stewart. His first posthumous film will be Star Trek Beyond, in theaters on July 22nd.
