Over the weekend, the entertainment industry lost another great talent when Anton Yelchin passed away in a freak car accident during the early hours of Sunday morning.

In his short 27 years, Yelchin built up an impressive resume, starring in a wide range of critically acclaimed independent films including Alpha Dog, Like Crazy and Green Room. Anton's most famous role was in the current Star Trek trilogy, where he played the young navigator Pavel Chekov with his usual charm and charisma.

Over the past 24 hours, social media has been flooded with emotional tributes to Yelchin and the powerful impact he had on lives across the globe:

J.J. Abrams posted this touching handwritten note on his Instagram, summing up exactly what we've all been thinking. The two worked closely together on the set of the first two Star Trek films in the rebooted trilogy, where Abrams directed Yelchin in the role of Chekov:

A number of Yelchin's Star Trek co-stars also shared their thoughts on social media, refusing to hold back on the emotional impact of their loss:

Alumni of the Star Trek franchise who didn't directly work with Yelchin also paid their respects online, echoing our thoughts at this time:

The official Star Trek account shared this touching tribute to the man best known as Chekov:

Friends of the star conveyed their shock and devastation online too:

The rest of Hollywood also took time out to share their condolences to Yelchin's family, including the likes of Anna Kendrick, Chris Evans and Tom Hiddleston:

Yelchin has a number of completed projects lined up for release later this year, including We Don't Belong Here, Rememory, and Porto. His first posthumous film will be Star Trek Beyond, in theaters on July 22nd. Fans will also remember Yelchin's raw talent from his guest appearance on the TV show Curb Your Enthusiasm, which you can watch below.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Yelchin's family and friends during this difficult time.
