Warning: This article contains Game of Thrones spoilers from Season 6, Episode 9 and speculation about what could happens next!
It wasn't even the season finale, but last night's episode of Game of Thrones already blew our minds with one of the most epic battle scenes of the show's history. You can click here for a full recap, but all you need to remember is that evil Ramsay Bolton finally, finally met his demise in the long-awaited "Battle of the Bastards," with Sansa undergoing a very Littlefinger-esque kind of evolution.
While we're getting ready for the world-shattering event that is going to be Episode 10, there's already news of Season 7 surfacing, mainly the casting of two new characters. Fan site Watchers on the Wall is pointing out that two young characters are being cast: A 16-year-old Northern girl [who will] take part in what’s being called “a high-stakes scene with leading cast members.” The second role is for a 10-year-old Northern boy. He appears to be a part of the same “high-stakes” scene as the teenage girl.
Now that we're left without books to speculate on, who do you think these two youngsters could be? If you don't theorize that they're new characters who we'll just have to wait to discover, there are two main possibilities.
1. Alys Karstark And The Son Of Smalljon Umber
What if the teenage girl was Alys Karstark, daughter of Lord Rickard Karstark, the second lord to name Robb Stark the King in the North? In the books, she's first betrothed to Daryn Hornwood, but he dies in battle at the hands of Jaime Lannister. When her uncle Arnolf Karstark tries to force her to marry her cousin Cregan Karstark, she flees to the Wall where Jon Snow arranges her marriage to a wildling chief who, in the current state of things on the show, could clearly be Tormund (even if that would upset the ever-growing number of Brienne-Tormund shippers).
The boy could then be the son of Smalljon Umber, who himself was the son of Jon Umber, the first lord to have proclaimed Robb Stark the King in the North. It would fit perfectly with the newfound power of the Starks, who finally got their revenge on Ramsay Bolton, and would consolidate their control of the North if they can once again count on the loyalty of the Karstarks and the Umbers.
2. Lyanna Stark And Howland Reed
The R+L=J theory has been rocking the Game of Thrones fandom for a while now, and it's about time we see Lyanna Stark come back to the screen. Although we already caught a glimpse of her in the show, it's her storyline at an older age that's really interesting. The younger sister of Ned Stark, Lyanna was famously chosen by Prince Rhaegar Targaryen at the tourney at Harrenhal, even though he was already married and she was betrothed to Robert Baratheon. The scandal set in motion a series of events that brought the Targaryen rule to an end, starting with Rhaegar's abduction of Lyanna. Or did they run away together?
More flashbacks to the Tower of Joy story would certainly help us see a bit clearer, and maybe finally get the answer to the mystery of Jon Snow's parentage. As for the young boy, the safest bet would be Howland Reed, who was still young at the time of the tourney at Harrenhal, and who Lyanna might have herself defended, perhaps dressed up as the mystery knight. Howland is the father of Jojen and Meera Reed, and reportedly saved Ned Stark's life when they came to rescue Lyanna at the Tower of Joy.
Who do you think the two new characters in Game of Thrones Season 7 are?
