No movie is free from occasional rumors and wild speculation, but when it comes to Star Wars there seems to be a new rumor every week, and the speculation goes from wild to frenzied. Such is the case with Star Wars Episode VIII and, thanks to supposed set leaks, the most recent rumors have sent the fandom into overdrive. And the weirdest thing of all is, they might actually be true.

[Warning: Obviously, this article might contain spoilers for Star Wars 8. Or it might not! We'll have to wait a while to know for sure, so read on at your own risk.]

According to the rumors, reported by Stormtrooper Larry (who has been accurate in the past), Star Wars Episode 8 is going to recount the origins of the Jedi Order and the Force itself. This fable will be told through a Force vision shared by Rey and Luke Skywalker, and there's a big twist hinted at in the report.

A Tale Of Good & Evil — And Force Trees

Yep, Force trees. And that's actually the one part of the rumor that might prove it to be true. But we'll get to that later. According to the leak, the scene begins with Luke telling Rey he's going to reveal the reason for the Jedi Order's downfall, that they became arrogant in the pursuit of the Chosen One, whom they believed to be Anakin Skywalker. Remember that little plot point from the prequels? Looks like the possible appearance of Hayden Christensen in Episode 8 isn't so unlikely after all.

To help Rey understand, Luke takes her back to the origins of the Force itself.

They see two children playing near a tree on an alien planet. The boy noticed that he had greater strength and intuition when he was closer to this tree. The girl noticed that the tree also made her brother increasingly angry. One day an argument breaks out between the children, and the boy kills the girl. The boy touches the tree and is “transformed.” He kills his parents and leaves the planet. Meanwhile the girl is revealed to be alive, transformed by the tree as well, using her power to start the first Jedi Order.

So, humans first encountered the Force via a tree on a planet far, far away. Intriguing. But what's more intriguing is the fact that this girl tells her followers that she will be reincarnated, as a boy or a girl, millennia after her death. I think we all know where this is going.

That's pretty much where the leak ends, aside from confirming that Luke isn't Rey's father, and briefly alluding to a "choice" that Rey is told she has to make. This all begs so many questions. Is Rey the Chosen One? Was Anakin her previous incarnation? Or was he the reincarnation of the evil boy? And what is Rey's choice?

You can see why the internet is going nuts over this. But we're not going to delve into theories and speculation (yet) — we're just going to tell you why this is all probably true.

We Already Saw The Tree In Shattered Empire

Before Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens was released, Lucasfilm and Disney teamed up with Marvel to publish a lead-in comic. Shattered Empire followed Poe Dameron's mother, Shara Bey, as she teamed up with the heroes of the original trilogy. And her mission with Luke Skywalker featured the branches of a now familiar Force sensitive tree.

These two saplings are all that remain of the tree that once stood at the heart of the Jedi temple on Coruscant, and Luke is on a mission to steal these relics back from the Empire. They manage to retrieve the Force sensitive branches, and Luke gives one to Shara as thanks for her help on the mission. Which means that Poe Dameron grew up next to a Force sensitive tree, perhaps the very tree to introduce humanity to the Force.

So, putting the hints in Shattered Empire together with the recent rumors, it seems like this leak might actually be true. And that's quite exciting, as Star Wars 8 could explore the mythology of the Force itself — what it is, how it came to be channeled through this tree, and what this means for the future of the Jedi.

Do you think Rey is the Chosen One?
