Selena Gomez once admitted that, despite her Mexican heritage, she does't speak her father's native tongue. But it looks like the 23-year-old has been studying hard to brush up on her Spanish language skills for a new commercial.
Back in 2010, she told Latina that she only had a basic understanding of Spanish:
"I practice [Spanish], but I can understand it better than I can speak it. So in a lot of my interviews that I did recently, they would speak to me in Spanish and I would answer back in English. They were like, 'You pick it up so easily,' but I don’t want to say it in Spanish because I’d be embarrassed if I mess something up."
Although the prospect of messing up a Spanish sentence isn't quite as cringeworthy as, say, falling over on stage, I totally understand where Gomez was coming from. But luckily for her, she was keen to improve.
Indeed, the determined star said she'd continue to keep on learning and improving her skills, hopefully with the use of online software:
"I really want to get Rosetta Stone, because I really need to learn my language."
Now, six years on from that interview, Gomez has shown firsthand what a few years of study can do. In her new Pantene commercial, the singer has clearly mastered an impressive Spanish accent. Check it out below:
She sounds so amazing! Hopefully she continues to improve her new skill, especially because her Latino fans seems so happy!
