With the announcement that Spider-Man: Homecoming has officially begun principal photography, news concerning the upcoming superhero film has been dropping left and right as of late. Last week in fact, it was reported that both Donald Glover (Community, The Martian) and Logan Marshall-Green (Prometheus, The Invitation) were joining the cast, and now it appears as though comedian Hannibal Buress – along with a few young up-and-comers – will be boarding the project as well.
Hannibal Buress has seen a meteoric rise to fame within the last half decade or so, beginning with brief stints on Saturday Night Live, 30 Rock, and Louie. He has also served in various supporting roles for both Neighbors and its sequel Neighbors 2, along with Daddy's Home and The Nice Guys most notably. Additionally, Buress will voice Buddy in the upcoming animated film Secret Life of Pets and is signed on for an undisclosed role in the feature film adaptation of Baywatch which is slated to arrive in theaters in 2017.
Variety first reported yesterday that Buress has signed on to join Spider-Man: Homecoming's loaded cast – which includes Robert Downey Jr., Michael Keaton, Marissa Tomei, Zendaya, and of course Tom Holland in addition to the other aforementioned actors – but states that character details are "heavily guarded," as is information concerning the film's plot. Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures were asked about the recent signing but both refused to comment.
As alluded to earlier, The Hollywood Reporter has also recently stated that a slew of young, relative newcomers were added to the cast list as well: Isabella Amara, Jorge Lendeborg Jr., and J.J. Totah. Amara was recently seen portraying a young Melissa McCarthy in Spring of 2016 comedy The Boss, and is involved in two films which are now entering post-production. Jorge Lendeborg Jr. has recently made his big screen debut in the Sundance Festival film The Land which will see a limited release on July 29, and J.J. Totah has served as a supporting character on numerous television programs such as Jessie and Glee. In addition to his roles on various television series, Totah also made his feature film debut at this year's Sundance Festival with the Jesse Plemons and and Molly Shannon-starred Other People which will arrive in theaters September 9.
Much like Hannibal Buress' character, details concerning the roles of Amara, Lendeborg Jr., and Totah are currently under wraps at this time. While the addition of all of these various talents is certainly exciting, it appears as though we will have to wait at least a little while longer to uncover any new details concerning the movie's plot as well as the roles of its numerous characters. Spider-Man: Homecoming is slated for release on July 7, 2017.
