In honor of Anton Yelchin's tragic and unexpected passing, Star Trek Beyond co-stars canceled their scheduled appearance at Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity. These cast members included Zachary Quinto (Spock), Chris Pine (Kirk), Simon Pegg (Scotty) and John Cho (Sulu).
Paramount Pictures, the host of the event, released the cast's following statement:
All of us are deeply saddened by the loss of our friend Anton Yelchin. Out of respect, we are withdrawing our participation in the previously announced Star Trek Beyond event at Cannes Lions this week.
At the age of 27, Yelchin, who played Pavel Chekov in the Star Trek franchise, was killed last Sunday when his SUV fatally pinned him against a fence at his Los Angeles-area home.
Many heartfelt messages from Yelchin's fellow Star Trek cast have poured onto social media, along with messages from a host of other celebrities and fans, who will remember Yelchin as a remarkable actor. His co-star Cho posted the following message on Twitter:
I loved Anton Yelchin so much. He was a true artist — curious, beautiful, courageous. He was a great pal and a great son. I’m in ruins.
This will certainly make Star Trek Beyond, which is set to open July 22, a much more emotional film than was anticipated.
