'Put some skates on, be your own hero.'
It has only been seven years since Drew Barrymore's directorial debut, Whip It, skated into our lives in 2009, yet often we find that this hilarious and heartwarming coming-of-age tale is criminally overlooked. Oozing with girl power, energy, striped socks and sassy quips — what this movie may lack in drama it more than makes up for with charisma.
Lead by Ellen Page, Whip It follows misfit Bodeen teen Bliss Cavendar who rebels against her mother's aspirations of birthing a beauty queen and instead joins the Hurl Scouts, a ruthless Texan roller derby team. Here, Bliss realizes she must grow a pair of balls, pronto, in order to compete while simultaneously throwing her folks off the scent and enjoying a rather raunchy playtime pool session with a guy named Oliver.
Yet of course there was more to the Whip It tribe than roller derby and handsome guitarists — the rest of the cast was pretty ace too, and they all still look like they could whip our asses on the ring, don't you think?
