Suicide Squad is definitely looking to be DC's most ambitious film yet. A movie featuring an entire main cast of villains; not just any villains, but some of DC's most dangerous and psychotic super-criminals of all time!
With such a crazy cast of characters, it's going to take some serious method acting from the actors involved to truly portray the characters correctly. We've seen the trailers, and it looks like Will Smith, Margot Robbie and the other cast members are working their hardest to bring the characters to life, but none of them are working as hard as one cast member in particular: Jared Leto.
That's because Leto has the insanely difficult task of accurately portraying The Joker, DC Comic's craziest villain ever! When acting as the Clown Prince of Crime, you can't just phone it in, otherwise it won't feel genuine. Jared Leto is apparently aware of this, judging by the stories about his actions on and off set that we've heard.
We've already heard the stories time and time again, about how Leto apparently got really into his character, basically never turning off his Joker persona. He sent his cast members strange gifts like: anal beads, used condoms, and even a whole dead pig. Jared Leto even went so far as to send Margot Robbie, who portrays Harley Quinn, a love letter and a dead rat.
Needless to say, Leto has completely gotten into his character, creeping out his fellow cast members in the process. But there's one cast member who, up until recently, was thought to have been spared from receiving any of Joker's crazy "gifts."
The Strange Gift That Viola Davis Received
I wouldn't blame Jared Leto if he didn't send any gifts to Viola Davis; the actress portraying Amanda Waller is just as intimidating as her character! But as it turns out, Davis did get a special Joker gift, one that almost got Jared Leto in some serious trouble.
Viola Davis: "It was a little worrisome. It made you a little bit nervous and I'm pretty tough. You know I got into a few fights when I was growing up...but it scared me a little bit."
What odd present did Jared Leto send Viola to make her so nervous? Well apparently, he sent her a box of bullets. Not as gross as used condoms or a dead pig, sure, but getting a box of bullets delivered to you is still super nerve-wracking—especially when you know they came from a guy dressed as a pale, green-haired, murderous clown.
Even though it was Viola that received the menacing gift, it seems that Jared Leto was in more danger than she was. While attending a Glamour magazine party, Davis came face-to-actual-face with Jared Leto for the first time, and she was still recovering from her encounter with his Joker persona. Davis said:
"Before that I was only introduced to The Joker...and I almost had my pepper spray out. You know, 'You remember that bullet you sent me?'"
Luckily, it looks like no pepper-spraying occurred. But as crazy as Jared Leto's Joker antics may seem, he wasn't the only one that had Viola Davis shocked on set. Like I said, the entire main cast of Suicide Squad is full of crazy villains, and the actors apparently all got in to their roles during filming. Davis explained:
"Every single person in it gets to be completely insane because all the characters are insane. They're bad guys. We're all bad guys. It got so crazy that there were times during filming that I had heart palpitations—not only heart palpitations but at one point I said, 'Did I suffer from hearing loss?'"
With the amount of commitment there is behind-the-scenes, it really looks like Warner Bros. and DC are shaping up to give us quite the wild ride with Suicide Squad!
Will Jared Leto's odd gifts and the entire cast's insane level of method acting be worth it? I suppose we'll have to wait and see when Suicide Squad hits theaters August 5!
