It's been a pretty good week to be a Star Wars fan. We've received tons of news on the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, including new official character details, confirmation that James Earl Jones will return to voice Darth Vader, and plenty of production photos.
But the news rush isn't over yet, because Entertainment Weekly's debuted even more photos from the set of Rogue One, providing a look at some of the newest Star Wars heroes in action.
We already know that Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) and Captain Cassian Andor (Diego Luna) are a core pair in the film, leading a Rebel team to gain valuable intel on the Empire's Death Star. That's even more clear in the new pics, which show the duo on a ship alongside fellow Rebels. We could easily see them taking charge of the crew, laying out battle plans before attempting to bring down the Empire.
Another photo shows Andor alongside Rebel soldiers during a beach battle. We got a glimpse at a beach assault in the film's teaser trailer, and further photos from the setting indicate it could play a major role in the film, possibly serving as the site for an epic clash between Rebel soldiers and upgraded Stormtroopers.
The new photos also provide another look at Chirrut Imwe (Donnie Yen) and Baze Malbus (Jiang Wen). The characters were close friends before joining Jyn Erso's crew, but as these photos show they couldn't be more different.
Chirrut uses his belief in the Force to overcome his blindness, and has been described as a monk-like character. But this monk is a warrior and certainly looks intimidating in the photo above. We also get a better look at his primary weapon, which appears to be some sort of futuristic, sci-fi staff. The warrior swiftly took down a group of Stormtroopers with a wooden staff in the teaser trailer, so we're pretty excited to see the increased capabilities of his new weapon.
Meanwhile, Baze doesn't seem to have time for hokey religions and magic. If one thing's clear, he's putting his faith in a trusty blaster rifle. He appears to be one of the more hardened soldiers in the group, possibly taking the role of the crew's weapons expert.
Of course, the Rebel heroes will have to face off against dangerous adversaries on their quest to steal the plans to the Death Star. While fans have already seen some of Rogue One's new Imperial soldiers, the new photos also revealed the design for the Empire's imposing Deathtroopers. Clad in all black, these guys look to be the most deadly soldiers in the Empire's army.
Restoring Faith in Rogue One
Fans who've lost faith in Rogue One following rumors of massive reshoots should feel better after a week's worth of exciting news. It seems evident that director Gareth Edwards and his team have the fans firmly in mind, going so far as to cast Forest Whitaker as a live-action version of a character from the beloved Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated TV series. And as the production stills show, Rogue One should provide a unique war-movie style while still feeling like a Star Wars film. The heroes might be new and the style a bit different than what we're used to, but the Death Star heist is an integral part of the Star Wars mythos that fans should still be excited to see on the big screen.
