Lets just start by saying, I'm not claiming this article to be a definitive list of these types of moments in film and animation. In fact, I'm only saying that these are just a few of my personal favorites. So no need to get up in arms. In fact, the purpose of this article is to find out what scenes are out there that I may have missed or you absolutely think I need to see. These are my favorite types of moments in film. And I'm sure there are others out there I have missed and would love to see.
Dragon Ball Z
Even till this day, this scene is still one of my all time favorites. The scene was depicted in one of if not the greatest anime action cartoon of all time, Dragon Ball Z. Gohan is the child of the great savior Goku. Since day one Gohan had shown glimpses of great power and ability. He was never able to control his inner strength and prolong it for battle. That was until one of the gravest threats to Earth materialized in the form of an absorbing android being by the name of Cell. Goku was forced to train Gohan in a time slowing hyperbolic time chamber, in hopes that he could unleash his power and teach him to control it. It wasn't until all hope seemed lost in the battle for Earth. That Gohan, in a moment of clarity, realized what he had inside and unleashed it to help save the earth.
Dracula Untold tells the story of Vlad the Impaler as he seeks out the strength to protect his kingdom and his son from the Turks. Vlad decides to venture to Mt. Brokentooth to seek the power to save his people. Vlad is endowed with the abilities of the resident demon who lives in the mountain. He is told he only has to resist the thirst for blood for three days and he will be returned to his normal state. Only after being forced into combat with the Turkish Prince does Vlad discover his true destiny as DRACULA.
If you know anything about me, you know that the Matrix trilogy is my favorite movie series of all-time. The first movie, titled, 'The Matrix,' follows a hacker named Thomas Anderson, who is searching for the answer to the question: "What is the matrix?" Neo is contacted by a mysterious character named Morpheus and led down what is referred to as "The Rabbit Hole." What at first glance appeared to be your standard Hollywood action flick with a hint of romance and some intermittent martial arts, in one moment transformed into one of the greatest superhero flicks of all-time. It was the moment Neo began living the words of his pre destined prophecy as the chosen one and arose from death, to begin his journey to the end.
Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Well here it is. I'm sure many of you out there were wondering when this was going to make its appearance on the list. Of course we couldn't leave out Rey, the force sensitive loner who discovers her true destiny during the events of 'The Force Awakens." As most of us know, Rey has been purposed as the new protagonist of the Star Wars Universe. Throughout "Episode VII" Rey finds herself in dire situations and survives with the aid of her new found friend, Finn. Only when forced into one on one combat with Kylo Ren, Rey realizes her true power inside. And uses the force to bring a halt to the conflict.
Though the 2011 rebooted ThunderCats series which premiered on Cartoon Network was short lived. I started watching and holding on to a lot of skepticism, due to the fact that I remember the original series that was on back in the day. After the first couple episodes I couldn't turn away. The story was changed slightly to fit a modern audience. But at heart, it remained the same. It was the story of a young humanoid lion, named Lion-O. Who has to learn to lead his people, in a coming of age story. When Lion-O is forced to defend his kingdom against the evil Mumm-Ra, only then does he realize his true power and destiny.
These are just a few of my favorites. These are scenes that won me over in film and cartoon. There are of course endless others. But I love that turning point in a story, when the protagonist of a storyline finally realizes his or her purpose or destiny and turns the tides on the antagonist or obstacle in their way. Feel free to share in the comments some of your favorite moments like these. I would love hear or see more of them!
