"You're going to make a difference. A lot of times it won't be huge,it won't be visible even. But it will matter just the same." - Commissioner James Gordon
Heroism doesn't always wear spandex or a suit. Sometimes, all you need is a pen and paper, along with a passion to write and a hunger for the truth. Although there have been superheroes with a journalist alter-ego, there are many who are just regular people and chose to investigate and write about the top topics raging their city. And unless you go full-on nuts like Rita Skeeter, you will be well liked among the public and feared by the bad guys. Battles often rage for a front-page story. Here are five journalists who will stop at nothing till they get to the bottom of the story; whether it is by going undercover on a sailing ship into a far away land, or by publishing a story about the most notorious criminal in the city-
1. Benjamin "Ben" Urich- MARVEL COMICS
Ben Urich is the best reporter in the Marvel Universe. In the comics, he has exposed Wilson Fisk as the King Pin and outed Norman Osborn as The Goblin. He discovered Matt Murdock's secret double life, but kept quiet about it. He even discovered Spider-Man's identity, but again, kept it to himself.
"Hell you pretty much brought down the Italian mob when I was in diapers." -Karen Page
He's just one of those guys who does not give up. Be it Union Allied or the identity of the Red Hulk, he will stop at nothing. It was extremely unfortunate when he was killed off in the Daredevil Season 2.
2. Vicki Vale- DC COMICS
A reporter on the Gotham Gazette, Vicki Vale loves to report on the Bat of Gotham. She is attracted towards Bruce, and always arrives at the same hypothesis at the end of every issue- Bruce Wayne is the Batman. But of course Mr. Wayne always has some trick up his sleeve to misdirect her. In one particular story, by means of some rigorous investigating, she even discovers the identity of everyone in the Bat-family. Vicki's character has been re-invigorated by the recent Frank Miller's Batman: Year One. She is the prime example of a career oriented woman with a high degree of independence, intelligence and self sufficiency.
3. Tintin by Herge
If you are a 90's kid, and you haven't read Tintin comic books, or watched Tintin cartoons, you have missed out on a lot of fun. No matter where he goes, the is always a story worth telling. With a mind like Sherlock Holmes, and the desire to pursue investigative journalism, Tintin together with his trusted side-kick Snowy make up for a formidable team and have solved more crimes than their counterparts Thomson and Thompson could ever count. Along with Mr.Calculus and Haddock, this guy is the epitome of kindness and extensive hard-work leading to his breakthroughs in investigations.
4. Lois Lane- DC COMICS
Superman's chief love interest and DC's most bad-ass non-superhero woman, Lois Lane is a Pulitzer-prize winning investigative journalist. When Lane finds a story, she has every intention in publishing it, like we saw in Man of Steel. She is a strong-willed and brave woman with a moral sense of journalistic ethics, and is not the damsel-in-distress that movies portray her to be. She has remained stubborn and fearless in her pursuit of truth and a great story.
5. Mikael Blomkvist- MILLENNIUM SERIES
Read The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo for a taste of how Blomkvist works. Sentenced to three months in prison and ordered to pay a hefty fine, this guy bounces back, survives a gun-shot missing him, and he brings down a billion dollar company single-handedly. Now that's the kind of journalist you would want writing on your favourite daily newspaper. This guy made it his personal mission to bring down a corrupt mechanism with the help of a fellow hacker. Which he did.
These reporters, along with several others, represent strong-willed characters who are not submissive to the system, and who make the corrupt system submit to them. From reporting about crimes in Gotham and Hell's Kitchen, to stolen gems of an ancient treasure, these and many other journalists work hard at their jobs and would never take 'NO' for an answer, come what may. Though sometimes thrown into the eye of the storm, their strong will-power and ideologies never allow them to get lost in it.
