We're less than a month away from the release of Justin Lin's Star Trek Beyond and the franchise's 50th anniversary. Since J.J. Abrams first rebooted Star Trek back in 2009, Paramount has unabashedly pushed the boundaries of the Enterprise crew and the franchise as a whole. Today, Paramount released the third trailer for Star Trek Beyond, featuring the new single by Rihanna, "Sledgehammer."
Watch the final trailer for Star Trek Beyond below:
Is it just me, or does every major film seem to have a major pop single attached? Combining Star Trek with the star power of the Grammy-winning pop artist may seem like an unlikely pairing, but in this instance, I think Rihanna's otherworldly vocals prove surprisingly fitting. Let's take a look at how the new trailer stacks up:
A New Big Bad
Krall, the new villain in Beyond, is played by the already menacing Idris Elba. Since his first appearance, Elba has confirmed that — despite some physical similarities — he is a new species of reptilian alien and not a Gorn from the original series.
Captain No More
Here we can see The Swarm — as Zoe Saldana claims the cast and crew have been calling it — taking down the Starship Enterprise as the Kirk watch from the escape pod above. Whether or not this is the same Swarm species from Voyager has yet to be confirmed, but with an infinite number of alternate universes, anything is possible. Either way, things aren't looking great for the crew, with Kirk proclaiming:
"I know this isn't the last of my crew, but this is my last report as the captain of the Starship Enterprise."
The Enterprise Crew Imprisoned
Wherever the Enterprise has crash landed, it would appear that most of the crew is being held captive by these unknown aliens.
We still don't know much about Sofia Boutella's mysterious new character Jaylah — other than that she kicks serious ass — but her prominent role in the trailers indicates we'll learn plenty in due time.
"Let's make some noise."
I don't know about you guys, but Star Trek Beyond looks like it's ramping up to be one of the most intense movies in the franchise. With lifelong Star Trek fans Simon Pegg and Doug Jung as screenwriters, I have high hopes that the third installment will live up to all fan expectations.
Star Trek Beyond brings back franchise veterans Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Zachary Quinto as Spock, Zoe Saldana as Uhura, Karl Urban as Dr. Leonard McCoy, Simon Pegg as Scotty and John Cho as Sulu. Beyond will also be the first posthumously released film for the late Anton Yelchin, who sadly died in a freak automotive accident on June 19.
Star Trek Beyond will premiere on July 22, 2016.
