Despite many shocking and heartbreaking moments throughout the entirety of Game of Thrones, Season 3, Episode 9 still remains one of the most talked about episodes of the entire series. It was this episode of course, that contained the horrific and bloody "Red Wedding."
The Red Wedding was unexpected heartbreak for those of us who hadn't read the books. We lost four Starks (Catelyn, Robb, Talisa and their unborn baby) in one fell swoop thanks to the work of Lords Walder Frey and Roose Bolton, and of course the true mastermind, Lord Tywin Lannister.
After being extended guest rights by Walder Frey, Robb Stark and his contingent were lulled into a false sense of security at the wedding of Edmure Tully and Roslin Frey. However, after the ceremony and the bedding, the doors of the great hall were locked and the massacre began.
Firstly, Talisa Stark's unborn child was killed, and she was fatally wounded when she was stabbed repeatedly in the stomach by Lothar Frey.
Then, after seeing his wife being stabbed, Robb was shot with arrows by the assassins who had been posing as musicians.
Finally, after Robb was stabbed in the heart by Roose Bolton (as he told him "the Lannisters send their regards"), Catelyn Stark had her throat slit by Black Walder Rivers.
What an episode!
After the events of the Red Wedding, things didn't look good for our beloved Starks. There were not a lot of evil men in the world, filled with a lot of evil plans. However, three seasons later the scores seem to have been finally evened up, and boy was it a case of poetic justice.
Firstly, the puppet master of the Red Wedding, Lord Tywin Lannister, was killed in Season 4 in the very same manner as Robb, being both shot with arrows, and also hit in the heart.
Then, in Season 6, Episode 2 Roose Bolton was killed by his bastard son, Ramsay in the same way as Talisa and her unborn child: stabbed in the stomach.
And finally it was Lord Walder Frey's turn in the Season 6 finale when Arya completed the revenge by slitting Frey's throat, just like his son did to her mother.
Frey seemed to seal his fate earlier in the episode when he gave a toast proclaiming that every time a Frey or Lannister killed an enemy they would say "the Freys and the Lannisters send their regards." Almost the exact same words earlier uttered by Roose Bolton.
And Lothar Walder and Black Walder Rivers, who stabbed Talissa and slit Catelyn's throats? Well, they were the two who ended up in Arya's Walder pie.
Ah yes, revenge is sweet.
