Since his role as pirate captain Muse in Captain Phillips just three years ago, 31-year-old Barkhad has started to make his mark on the film scene. With a BAFTA under his belt, two films due out later this year and one already in pre-production, he's just signed on for the sequel to sci-fi classic Blade Runner. While it's not clear what Abdi's role will be in the movie, if his previous performances are any indication, he'll be able to hold his own alongside legend Harrison Ford. (Check out everything you need to know about Blade Runner 2 right here.)
Born in the Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia, Abdi and his family moved to Yemen when he was 7 years old to escape the Somali Civil War. They relocated to the States when Barkhad was 14, where he later attended Minnesota University. A relative Hollywood newcomer, Abdi made his film debut at the age of 28. If you're not familiar with his short but impressive resume, check out his filmography below.
Captain Phillips (2013)
At the age of 28, Barkhad Abdi wowed the film industry with his portrayal of Somali pirate leader Abduwali Muse in Captain Phillips. Based on a true story, Tom Hanks plays the titular role and captain of the ship Maersk Alabama, which is boarded by four armed pirates off the coast of the Horn of Africa. Abdi kickstarted his career, winning the BAFTA for Best Supporting Actor, an Oscar nom, and various other accolades.
Eye In The Sky (2015)
Alongside Helen Mirren and Aaron Paul, Barkhad Abdi starred in Eye in the Sky — one of Alan Rickman's last two movies — as Jama Farah, an undercover agent in this military action/drama about drone warfare in Kenya.
The Brothers Grimsby (2016)
Barkhad Abdi had a small role dealing heroin in the bawdy Sacha Baron Cohen comedy, The Brothers Grimsby.
Family Guy (2016)
Earlier this year, Abdi had a guest appearance in Family Guy episode "Road to India," parodying his performance as Muse in Captain Phillips.
Barkhad Abdi's Other Upcoming Movies
Abdi currently has two films in post-production: Where The White Man Runs Away and Extortion. In addition to the Blade Runner sequel, he also has another film in pre-production status: The Extraordinary Journey of the Fakir, which is due out in 2017.
