A photo of J.K. Simmons' majorly ripped bod caused quite a stir on the internet last month. The photo surfaced from celebrity trainer Aaron Williamson's Instagram account, leading fans to speculate that Simmons was taking his role as Commissioner Gordon in the upcoming Justice League film to a whole new level.
The photo showed 61-year-old Simmons lifting weights, revealing some serious biceps. For real: Those guns meant business. Simmons also sported a long grey beard, which was not very Gordon-like at all. The photo divided fans, some saying they were excited for this new badass version of the beloved character, while others were not impressed.
Well, the latter will find themselves relieved as J.K. Simmons himself has debunked the photo, revealing to Business Insider that it's actually an older photo from April while he was preparing for another film and has zero to do with Justice League. In fact, he says he doesn't look anything like that right now (Justice League is currently filming).
The bulk-up was for a film titled I'm Not Here and since it was taken, Simmons says he's shaved his beard. The actor also reassured fans that he has Gordon and their best interests in mind, and wouldn't so drastically change such a beloved character, saying:
"I'm not going to mess with something that iconic."
To be honest, I am not sure if I am relieved or disappointed. I mean, he was really jacked, but with the direction Zack Snyder has taken the DC Extended Universe, it kind of made sense. At the same time, I love the rule that if something's not broken, don't fix it. J.K. Simmons was an incredible casting choice for the role and I have no doubt whatever direction he takes it in he'll nail it.
Justice League hits theaters November 17th, 2017.
