Rejoice, Preacher fans. Our beloved Jesse Custer and crew will be returning next year. AMC has renewed Preacher for an extended second season with thirteen new episodes due to air in 2017.
Charlie Collier, president of AMC, had this to say:
“Preacher is a special television program and we’re eager to share with fans the rest of this wild first season and, now, an expanded second season - What Sam, Seth, Evan and the entire creative team have achieved in bringing Garth Ennis’ graphic novel to the screen is extraordinary. We look forward to more time with these unforgettable characters be it in Heaven, Hell, Texas or beyond.”
As a fan of the series, I'm delighted that we're getting a longer second season. The storyline is only beginning and there is still so much more left to be revealed. Having never read the comic books that the series is based on, I've no idea where the story will go in the future. So with that in mind, lets take a look at a few possible storylines that could be explored in the second season:
Jesse Custer's Past
As we are only five episodes in, there hasn't been a lot of information given on the background of certain characters. Jesse, however, has had some important flashbacks detailing his life as a younger man. Jesse appears to hold his father up on a pedestal, despite the fact that we've seen the man being violent toward him. We also know that his father owned the church that Jesse now inhabits, so there is definitely more story left to be told here.
The Power Of The Unknown Entity
In the pilot, Jesse was inhabited by an unknown entity. A series of flashbacks earlier in the episode highlighted that previous inhabitants of the entity were unable to hold the power and exploded. However, Jesse seems more than capable of not only housing the entity but using its power.
So far he has been able to use the power for good purposes, but there is definitely something unusual — perhaps demonic — about this ability. In the latest episode, Quincannon — who has been commanded by the entity/Jesse to "serve God" — reacted horrifically and massacred a room full of people, leading us to believe that we have only scratched the surface.
The Saint Of Killers
I'm going to be honest — the only reason that I know the name Saint of Killers is because I did a little research following the second episode. In the television series, very little has been explained about this man; he's an aged cowboy who is seen only in flashbacks riding into town on horseback and apparently killing people.
The opening flashbacks featuring this character are arguably one of the most enthralling yet terrifying segments of the show, so I'm extremely excited to see this explored in the second season.
More Of Cassidy Being Cassidy
Cassidy brightens up the screen every time he opens his mouth. Arguably the funniest character on television, Joseph Gilgun is phenomenal in the role and I look forward to Cassidy's storyline more than any other main characters'.
Jesse still doesn't fully believe that Cassidy is a vampire yet, so when the truth finally comes out, there will certainly be some incredible scenes between the two. Another season of Cassidy's quips alone is enough reason to be excited!
I'm thrilled that Preacher has received a second season and I look forward to watching the remaining episodes of the first play out. Preacher will be leaving its freshman year at the top of its game and if that isn't something to preach about, then I don't know what is.
