The Avengers is a team with a constantly changing roster of superheros - and has had more than one spin-off team over the years. Now, Marvel has announced an all-new, very patriotic Avengers team, just in time for the 4th of July.
Titled the US Avengers, this new title will be an ongoing series featuring Red Hulk, Cannonball, a new Iron Patriot, the future Captain America Danielle Cage, Pod and the Unbeatable Squirrel Girl, according to a reveal in the Washington Post. These new Avengers will be the super-powered face of A.I.M., the previously-evil organisation that is taking over from S.H.I.E.L.D. since its downfall.
This team seems to be bringing many previously-lesser-known heroes to the foreground, and although it seems like it won't be taking itself too seriously, that just means that Squirrel Girl is the perfect fit. Seeing as she is front and center in the new artwork, and has been a longtime member of the Great Lakes Avengers, it looks like Doreen might just be heading up this latest team in the Marvel Universe! She was also briefly a nanny for Luke Cage and Jessica Jones, which is sure to make things interesting between her and Danielle - how will Doreen handle conflict with Captain America when she used to change her diapers?!
Seeing Squirrel Girl at the head of a new team is a huge thrill for fans of the quirky (and unbeatable!) college student, but could it also herald a shot at the big screen for Squirrel Girl?
The Marvel Cinematic Universe is rapidly expanding, with more and more minor characters appearing on the big screen - and more and more celebrities wanting a piece of comic-book action. Latest to voice her opinion on all things superhero is Anna Kendrick, who told Net a Porter that she would love to play Doreen Green in a recent interview.
Although she doesn't know much about the character, she was enthusiastic about the idea of playing Doreen after her brother introduced her to the comic.
My brother sent me a Squirrel Girl comic because he thinks I should [play her]. I don’t know what Squirrel Girl does other than be half squirrel, but I could be half squirrel!
She certainly suits the character - a bubbly brunette with a fantastic sense of humor and a tendency to be described as "cute", Anna Kendrick could be the perfect choice to bring Doreen Green to life. Having rocked her performance as college-student Beca in the Pitch Perfect franchise, she's certainly got that off-beat early-twenties vibe, and she's an incredibly relatable actress - ideal for a superhero as down-to-earth as Squirrel Girl.
Squirrel Girl isn't likely to get a solo film any time soon, of course, but it would be great to see her pop up somewhere - along with her trusty sidekick, Tippy Toe. Perhaps these two could make an appearance in Infinity War, given that the two-part ensemble movie will reportedly include a vast number of named characters. Whether Anna Kendrick ends up taking on the role in the MCU, or even if Doreen doesn't go further than the new US Avengers, it's wonderful to see Squirrel Girl getting a little more attention...
