In the wake of shows such as Friends and Two and a Half Men, it's become almost expected that the cast of a hit show will be be raking in the big bucks. Last year it was reported that the cast of The Big Bang Theory were earning $1 million each per episode, but how does this stack up with other popular sitcoms, such as Modern Family?
For seven seasons we've welcomed the Pritchett-Dunphy-Tucker-Delgado family into our living rooms, and followed the ups and downs of their lives through the series' hilarious mockumentary style. When the series began in 2009, only a few of its ensemble cast were big names, but seven years later the entire cast have all gone on to have massive success aside from Modern Family. So now that the show is the most watched series on ABC (followed by Grey's Anatomy and Scandal), how much money does the cast make? Here's a breakdown:
Ed O'Neill came into Modern Family as the big name, having starred on Married With Children for 10 years, and his salary reflected that. Initially O'Neil received $95,000 per episode (which eventually rose to $105,000 an episode during Season 3), and also had a back-end deal which gave him even more.
However, in 2012 the rest of the cast went through fierce salary negotiations, and O'Neil agreed to cut his salary to match his co-workers, but in return received a bigger cut of the back-end profits. Four years later, it's expected that O'Neil will be earning around $350,000 per episode for Season 8 or $7.7 million, before any back-end profits.
Sofia Vergara, Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Eric Stonestreet and Julie Bowen
The remaining five main adults in the show may not receive quite as much in back-end profits as Ed O'Neill, but after the 2012 negotiations managed to nab a similar deal.
Before the deal in 2012, the three earned around $65,000 per episode, which was moved up to around $175,000 for Season 4 (a figured which also included a $20,000+ bonus). Going into Season 8 later this year it's thought that, like Ed O'Neill, the cast will earn $350,000 per episode as well as their cut of the back-end profits (albeit a smaller cut than Ed O'Neill).
Sarah Hyland, Ariel Winter, Nolan Gould and Rico Rodriguez
After contract negotiations in 2012 the four older child stars of the series were thought to be bringing in around $70,000 per episode for Season 4 (up from their earlier salaries of between $15,000 and $25,000 per episode). Due to a $10,000 per season raise, it looks like the quartet will be earning around $110,000 per episode for Season 8, or $2.42 million in total.
Aubrey Anderson-Emmons and Jeremy Maguire
The youngest two members of the cast both earn an undisclosed amount for their services on the show. However given that the other four child stars on the series all earned between $15,000 - $25,000 per episode for their first three seasons, it's likely that Maguire earns a similar amount, with Anderson-Emmons coming in a little higher, having now been on the show for five seasons.
