"Homewrecker," the Season 4 Finale of Hulu's The Mindy Project certainly explored every definition of the term. Not only were Mindy's clothes wrecked, but so was her apartment, her sex trip to Miami, her supposed yet imaginary sexual tension with Morgan, her blossoming chlamydia-infested romance with Jody, and her platonic relationship with her baby daddy and ex, Danny Castellano. Let's not forget about Danny's secret engagement... In the words of Jeremy, "Everybody stay calm!"
It's no surprise that Mindy Lahiri's (Mindy Kaling) life is a wreck, she admitted it herself when Danny (Chris Messina) pointed out the mess in her apartment and she broke down crying. Her chaotic self also happens to be the central theme to every episode the show has ever aired.
In this finale, The Tasmanian Devil (a.k.a. Taz) may have just stopped by for a quickie because Mindy has found herself in quite the pickle. Except, knowing her, she's already eaten said pickle hoping it would make her problems disappear. This plan failed, and now she wants another one.
Given the introduction to the episode, we expect the plot to revolve around Mindy's reaction to Danny's wedding. This little announcement gets buried, finding its way to her mailbox instead. Because that's how every ex-girlfriend wants to find out about the former love of her life's new engagement. We know it's only a matter of time before she opens the invitation in the Season 5 premiere.
However, if Dr. Castellano's lucky, the letter will get lost in the vortex that is Dr. Lahiri's apartment. The odds are in his favor since he already got lucky once (in the elevator), but every secret's at risk if Morgan (Ike Barinholtz) knows about it. Danny should be careful now that Mindy owns a gun — and knows how to clumsily use it.
We've spent the second half of Season 4 mourning the break-up of Leo's parents. This relationship was the prominent love theme of the entire show from day one, regardless of other fleeting romances. It was hard to accept at first, but we must admit that the recent spark with Jody Kimball-Kinney (Garret Dillahunt) has been a refreshing distraction.
Mindy clearly had feelings for the Southern gent before learning about his chlamydia. That's gone now, but have her butterflies disappeared along with his STD? Jody refuses to move on and does the most ridiculous things to earn Mindy's forgiveness. I mean, the doctor must be in love if his IQ drops to the point of getting this reckless lady a loaded gun.
As if there was ever any doubt regarding Jody's enamoration, he buys her a frickin' apartment and even drops the L-bomb. Not "lesbian," she didn't come out of the closet, it merely caught on fire. He said THE L-word! Curious about her loving response to him bearing his heart and soul? "Holy sh*t." Perhaps her answer would have been different had she not told Danny she loved him minutes earlier.
In the previous episode, Danny finally gave his okay for Jody to make a move after previously forbidding it. Not cool, Danny. Even more uncool that he begins the episode with a wedding invitation for Mindy only to give her a front row seat to something else... Sex, we're talking about sex.
Does this mean Danny will break off his engagement with Sarah so Leo can see his parents reunite? Or perhaps, Danny will brush it off as a mistake and continue his plans to wed... Maybe Mindy will "win the break-up" when Jody's selfless and loving act of generosity fulfils her lifelong dream of living in a chick flick.
Or will Mr. Castellano's life come to a brutal end when Mindy finds the invite and shoots him in the head after aiming for his balls? For now, the gun will be put away as we must wait till Tuesday, October 4 for the Season 5 Premiere.
