While Arrow Season 4 was ill-received by fans and critics alike - with many criticizing the show's approach to magic and a major focus on romance and Felicity's life - the show did have its high points, one of which was newcomer Echo Kellum's Curtis Holt. With so much happening by the time the season finale aired, the one constant was his character.
Curtis Holt Will Become Mister Terrific Next Season
Curtis Holt, who is based off of the DC Comics character Mister Terrific, embodied everything that was great about Felicity from Arrow's 'golden days' and The Flash's Cisco Ramon. He was so well-received that he has been promoted to series regular for the show's fifth season. The question on everyone's mind about his promotion is: Will he become Mister Terrific?
There have been several hints throughout Season 4 that he could don the moniker. From the introduction of his T-Spheres to his natural athletic abilities, all signs point towards Curtis becoming his superhero alter ego. Fans are excited at the prospect of this terrific development, and so is Echo Kellum, as the actor all but confirmed that Curtis will become Mister Terrific.
At this past weekend’s Heroes and Villains FanFest at the Meadowlands Exposition Center in New Jersey, Kellum commented on if we will see Mister Terrific this season, saying
"It’s definitely going to happen this season. Ninety percent gonna happen.”
But Will A Tragedy Be The Catalyst For His New Life As A Superhero?
From that answer alone you can tell that Kellum is looking forward to the future of his character. Speaking more in depth about it, Kellum said that Holt's personal life will be affected by his role on Team Arrow
“Battling with that aspect of being a part of the team and getting into the field more, protecting people, I think it’s going to be a really fun season for him to see what type of hero he’s going to become."
Kellum followed his statement up with
“I think it’s going to be really interesting to see how that’s going to play against his backdrop at home, too.”
This is a very intriguing comment. In the comics, Holt didn't don the mantle of Mister Terrific until the heartbreaking death of his wife and child. While Curtis doesn't have a wife or child in Arrow, he does have a husband that has made frequent appearances on the show. It will be interesting to see if Kellum is hinting at the murder of Curtis's husband being the main factor that makes him Mister Terrific.
Mister Terrific's Costume Might Be The Best Comic-To-Live Action Transition We've Ever Seen On 'Arrow'
If all of this wasn't enough to make us excited for Curtis's return in Season 5, Kellum has asked Arrow producer Marc Guggenheim for a costume. Speaking to Movie Fone, Kellum expressed his excitement about getting a costume:
“Yes, yes. Second that! Where is my costume? Guggenheim, if you’re listening, or reading, whatever: Where’s my costume?"
The good thing about Mister Terrific's costume is that it will translate well from comics to TV. Arrow has had trouble in the past when it comes to character's costumes, such as Ravager, Huntress and even Oliver's first costume — and let's not forget the initial fan reaction at Diggle's costume. The simplicity of Mister Terrific's leather jacket and combat trousers will make his transition from page-to-screen very easy for the show.
It's great to see an actor excited about bringing an iconic DC character to life, especially when that character was one of the best things about Arrow. Could Curtis be the saving grace of Arrow? If Arrow is guilty of one thing, it's character development. They rush storylines and leave little room for development, sometimes ending in a mess of a final product. This can be seen in Laurel's progression to becoming Black Canary, and the forced romance of Felicity and Oliver. Luckily for us, it looks as if Curtis's transition to Mister Terrific will be a season long arc that will let us buy into his ascension to his crime fighting alter-ego.
Are you excited to see Curtis finally become Mister Terrific?
