The young star made his theatrical debut alongside his father in 2006’s The Pursuit of Happyness. In the biopic based on entrepreneur Chris Gardner’s struggles with homelessness, Jaden portrayed Gardner’s son. The film was critically-acclaimed and put Jaden in the cinematic spotlight. Jaden won an MTV Movie Award for his performance as well as three Teen Choice Awards.

His next movie was 2008's The Day the Earth Stood Still, in which he starred alongside Keanu Reeves. In this film, Smith once again demonstrated why he is one of our generation’s rising stars, with his performance earning him a Saturn Award for Best Performance by a Young Actor. The movie earned $233 million dollars in the worldwide box office.

The Karate Kid

Though Jaden demonstrated in his first two movies that he has what it takes to top his father Will, Jaden’s breakthrough performance came in the 2010 reboot of The Karate Kid. It was this film that catapulted Jaden to critical acclamation and massive praise. Starring alongside movie legend Jackie Chan, The Karate Kid was nominated for multiple awards and went on to win a People’s Choice Award and two Kid’s Choice Awards. With a production budget of just $40 million dollars, The Karate Kid earned a whopping worldwide total of $359.1 million dollars. It earned $55.6 million dollars in its opening week in the U.S. The overall reception for the film was positive and a sequel was soon announced.

I feel like it's an honor, actually, for people to think I'm crazy. Because they thought Galileo was crazy, too, you know what I'm saying? - Jaden Smith

After Earth

You’ve heard the expression “Everybody has a bad day,” but in Hollywood terms it’s “Everybody has a bad movie.” Unfortunately in Jaden’s case — and Will Smith’s — this happened with 2013’s After Earth. The movie brought the father-son duo back for a space adventure on a new planet, Nova Prime. In this movie, Earth is no longer a planet able to support human life. Though a great idea, its execution was undeniably bad. The movie only earned $60.5 million dollars in the domestic box office with a production budget of $130 million, and even Will Smith was heavily disappointed with the movie, calling it “the most painful failure” of his career. After Earth's huge letdown seemed to have affected Jaden, since he was absent from the big screen for almost three years.

No one will know where I am in ten years. They'll see me pop up, but they'll be like, ‘Where'd you come from?’ - Jaden Smith

Jaden Smith's Recent Appearances

Jaden returned to the movie scene in this year’s Brothers in Atlanta, an HBO TV comedy movie. He will appear in the upcoming Netflix original The Get Down, a musical drama series.
