In case you somehow missed the news, there's been a hint that the hugely anticipated Season 3 of Adult Swim's Rick and Morty is set to premiere towards the end of this month — July 26, in fact.
However, official confirmation on this point is still muddy, with series co-creator Dan Harmon saying only that they are targeting a release by the end of the year. Considering the sign off of last season — that we'd be waiting "a year and a half, or more!" for the next season — a July release seems a little on the optimistic side, the end of the year more likely.
Rick and Morty Season 3
Oh well, at least we know for sure that the new season will comprise of 14 episodes, the longest season yet (but still not long enough, we can all agree). So said Harmon and Rick and Morty creator Justin Roiland in a recent interview with Collider, in which they talked a little about the upcoming season.
But in the same interview they might've just given away a sneaky hint at a particular episode we can expect to see popping up in Season 3.
The formula of the show up until now has been to keep the majority of episodes narratively separate, rather than trying to carry over-arching plot strands throughout the seasons. But Harmon said a while back that Season 3 will be moving away from this model, and we'd be seeing a return to previous cliffhangers and characters in the new season.
It seems that's what Roiland and Harmon are planning to do with this episode for Season 3. Are you ready for "Interdimensional Cable 3"?
Justin Roiland: "I want to do ['Interdimensional Cable 3']. I love that fucking shit. It’s my favorite. I’ll push for it."
Interdimensional Cable 3
You'll probably remember the "Interdimensional Cable" episodes of the first two seasons as one of the exceptions to the rule of keeping things separate — as Rick points out in "Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate", they're doing a sequel.
The concept first popped up in Season 1, Episode 8 "Rixty Minutes", a cable box modified by Rick to gain access to all TV shows across the established Rick and Morty multiverse. Whilst this episode served as a sobering look at Beth and Jerry's relationship, it also provided a serious of amusing, disconnected vignettes, such as the now infamous "Hamster-in-Butt World".
The Interdimensional Cable reappeared again in Season 2, Episode 8 "Interdimensional Cable 2: Tempting Fate" when Jerry was hospitalized at St. Gloopy Noops after eating some bad Cherry Garcia ice cream, featuring instant fan-favorite 'Ants In My Eyes' Johnson.
The Interdimensional Cable episodes feature as an unfiltered outpouring of weirdness from the minds of Roiland and the writing staff — remember the Plumbus? — and are an amusing play on the filler-clip episode mechanic sometimes employed in sitcom and drama shows.
The short Interdimensional Cable clips tend to play out around and feed into other stories though, such as... Jerry donating his sexual organs to save the life of the alien Shrimply Pibbles. Well, what else did you expect from Rick and Morty? It's weird, but it works.
Finally it seems that Dan Harmon also has a particular episode on the burner for Season 3, but he declined to give away any more details than that in the interview. Could this be when we'll finally see the promised Mr. Meeseeks follow up episode?
Dan Harmon: "I'm going to make that a personal promise to myself. I'm going to force Mr. Meeseeks into season three."
Ooohhh... can do!
