Almost everyone knows Robin Hood as the bow-wielding outlaw of Sherwood Forest, or simply as the archer who steals from the rich and gives back to the poor. But did you know that there's another film based off this iconic hero announced? Two to be exact.
Because of the flop that was Ridley Scott's 2010 tale, Robin Hood, both Disney and Lionsgate studios have separate installments in various stages of development right now, Nottingham & Hood and Robin Hood: Origins...well, not exactly RIGHT now, but I think you get the general idea.
Not very much about Robin Hood: Origins is known as of now, being as the movie is stuck in development hell due to the filming of the second installment of the Kingsman film franchise, Kingsman: The Golden Circle, which has a release date of June 16, 2017. However, the film should begin shooting towards the end of the summer or early fall/autumn. In theory. Actually, we're not really sure. So what do we know so far?
Well, we know a little about...
When the film was first announced, we were told that Robin Hood: Origins would be a "gritty origin story in the vein of The Dark Knight” version of the classic English folk tale. So, R-rated? Probably.
In this upcoming version of the story, our hero, Robin Hood, will be a soldier who returns home from the Crusades only to find his beloved Sherwood Forest has been overrun by corruption and evil. He puts together a band of outlaws to fight back, becoming the hero Sherwood Forest deserves and/or needs. In the best-known versions of the legend, Robin Hood uses his sweet archery skills to steal from the rich and give to the poor, as we all know.
From the evidence given, it seems Robin Hood: Origins will have a few of the same aspects as both the lore itself, and the previous incarnations of Robin Hood in film.
Robin Hood - Taron Egerton
Besides being best known for Kingsman: The Secret Service, the 26-year-old actor has also done films like the recent Eddie the Eagle, Legend, and Testament of Youth. He'll also appear in Sing, which comes out later this year.
Actors Jack Huston, Jack Reynor, Dylan O'Brien, and Nicholas Hoult auditioned for the role of Robin Hood before Egerton was officially cast. But director Otto Bathurst (Peaky Blinders), REALLY wanted Taron Egerton for the role of Robin Hood, so much so that he decided to postpone the filming until Egerton was done with Kingsman 2.
Maid Marion - Eve Hewson
The 25-year-old is best known for playing Nurse Lucy Elkins in Steven Soderbergh's TV series The Knick. Her other works include The 27 Club, This Must Be the Place, Blood Ties, Enough Said, and last year's Bridge of Spies. She also happens to be the daughter of Bono of U2, so that's a fun fact for you.
Actresses Gaite Jansen, Lucy Fry, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw were all considered for the role of Marian before it ultimately went to Hewson.
Little John - Jamie Foxx
The 48-year-old is known for a wide variety of great films including Django Unchained, The Amazing Spider-Man 2, Law Abiding Citizen, Horrible Bosses, and Jarhead.
Little John, as we know, is Robin Hood’s right-hand man, who typically fights with a staff. In this incarnation, Little John is also a Crusades veteran, like Robin Hood, but one who fought on the opposite side. He's hardened by battle and tired of war. He initially distrusts Robin but eventually becomes his loyal lieutenant.
When the filming picks back up again, we're sure to get more information about the characters/castings and the overall plot. Since there have been many different tales about Robin Hood before, this one will have to stand above and beyond the rest. It might show different aspects from the previous movies, but since it's rated R, it'll more than likely show Robin be the savage, blood-thirsty beast he was portrayed as during the early ballads and tales of the bow-shooting hero.
