That's right (you definitely read it correctly), Matt Damon recently opened up to Irish Examiner on the possibility of starring in his very first superhero film (you know, if you don't count Jason Bourne as being super heroic). Earlier this week, on Monday, July 11th, 2016 to be exact, in an interview for his upcoming film Jason Bourne, Damon explained that he would love to have a part in a comic book film, although he would only do it under one condition. In other words, the odds are pretty narrow, however, there happens to be one film that perfectly fits the framework of his stringent criteria. First, let's take a look at what he had to say...
"I’d consider anything with the right director, but I can’t imagine there are any superheroes left, I think they’re all taken at this moment.” (Matt Damon in an interview with Irish Examiner on 7/11/16)
No superheroes left you say? Well, he has a point (even though there are still a ton he could play), but, he didn't mention anything about a super villain. He then went on to explain...
“If he (Ben) was directing me, I’d jump on it in a New York minute. I’d love to work with Ben." (Matt Damon seconds later in an interview with Irish Examiner on 7/11/16)
I got some news for you Matt Damon! Ben Affleck has been rumored (and more or less confirmed) to be the director of the next solo Batman film. Alright, I'm sure he already knows this, but what a perfect chance to get Matt Damon in a superhero project! Now, before you go starting on some awesome fan theories, he also added...
The problem with Ben is every time he directs a movie, he gives himself the best role in it, so until he’s willing to give up the best role to one of his friends, we’re not going to get on with it.”
There you have it, maybe it is impossible to get Damon to join the ranks of the World's Finest, since it probably would be pretty tough to get Ben to direct a different superhero film, and he already has the leading role in his own. But wait, even though I do love Batman (I mean, he's Batman), every so often he actually doesn't have "the best role" in his own movie. We can all agree that the Joker is the prime example of this, and yet Batman has a slew of other villains that could unquestionably soak up the spotlight.
Now, since Jared Leto is already filling the clown sized shoes of the Joker, Damon would most likely have to take on a different role. But who you ask? If your looking at Batman's rogue gallery there are almost and endless supply of scene stealing roles for him to play such as the Riddler, Two-Face, Red Hood, Black Mask, the Ventriloquist, Clayface, Scarecrow, Mr. Freeze, Calendar Man and Talon to name a few. All great choices in my opinion, but there is one that clearly stands out from the rest in my mind. Hush!!!
My deepest apologies if you thought I was yelling at you to be silent, or if you have not been exposed to one of the coolest series in comic book history, but Hush is a classic tale written by Jeph Loeb about a mysterious bandaged villain who is causing Batman's life to turn into a living nightmare. Hush is a master of conspiracies and seems to stay one step ahead of Bruce the whole way through, which could definitely lend itself to being the standout part in the film.
And what I think would really draw the Affleck/Damon duo to the project would be the intricate and heavyhearted story line with an incredible (although relatively predictable) twist at the end. Their writing prowess (having had won an academy award) lends itself to taking this idea to another level, especially with the help of comic legend Geoff Johns. Personally, I'd love to see them be able to mix the events of Batman: The Court of Owls in the movie as well, maybe even crossing them to a degree.
Overall the idea seems pretty brilliant, and Matt Damon is no stranger to Warner Brothers or mystery roles having played a big part in the cosmic film Interstellar. Whoever they would cast him as, I hope Matt Damon gets a chance to be in a superhero movie, as I think all brilliant actors should. This one just happens to be rather serendipitous, especially since Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were childhood friends, and that would mean a nerdy superhero film would kind of be their magnum opus. Just imagine how good this film would be if it was on par with their best!
