By now you've probably all taken a look through the list of major nominations for the 68th Primetime Emmy Awards, and picked your favorites to win. However, aside from all the glamorous categories that were announced in the live stream, there are also a ton of other categories you may not even be aware of! It's these lesser known categories where the true nomination shocks and surprises lie. Take a look below at a few 2016 Emmy nominations that might just surprise you:

1. The Netflix series that gripped us all snagged 7 noms!

That's right, hit Netflix series Making a Murderer didn't just hook viewers, but clearly also intrigued the Academy. Altogether it was nominated for:

  • Outstanding Directing For A Nonfiction Program
  • Outstanding Picture Editing For A Nonfiction Program
  • Outstanding Sound Editing For A Nonfiction Program
  • Outstanding Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series
  • Outstanding Documentary Or Nonfiction Series
  • Outstanding Sound Mixing For A Nonfiction Program
  • Outstanding Writing For A Nonfiction Program

2. RuPaul's Drag Race was nominated!

After eight seasons and 109 episodes, reality show RuPaul's Drag Race has finally been recognize by the Emmys!

Not only did host RuPaul receive a nomination for Outstanding Host for a Reality or Reality-Competition, but the show was also nominated in the category for Outstanding Make-up for a Multi-Camera Series or Special (Non-Prosthetic).

3. Game of Thrones dominated but Gay of Thrones featured too

Game of Thrones may have nabbed itself the most nominations with a crazy 23 nods, but let us not ignore the fact that Funny or Die series Gay of Thrones has also been nominated! The series, hosted by Jonathan Van Ness, earned a nom in the Outstanding Short Form Variety Series. Vintage Mia Farrow would be so happy!

4. The Muppets may have been cancelled but it's going out on a high

Even though ABC's The Muppets was cancelled after just one season, it still managed to land a nomination for Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program. Nice one Kermy!

5. Big Bang Theory didn't land any of the major categories but it still cleaned up

It's one of the biggest series on the air, and while audience fave The Big Bang Theory unfortunately didn't receive any nods in the major categories, it still managed seven overall! They are:

  • Bob Newhart for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Comedy Series
  • Laurie Metcalf for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series
  • Christine Baranski for Outstanding Guest Actress In A Comedy Series
  • Outstanding Production Design For A Narrative Program
  • Outstanding Cinematography For A Multi-Camera Series
  • Peter Chakos for Outstanding Multi-Camera Picture Editing For A Comedy Series
  • Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Series

6. The Walking Dead was only nominated TWICE

That's right, ratings blockbuster The Walking Dead may have had it's biggest year to date with an amazing Season 6, but sadly it only managed two nominations! The show was nominated for Outstanding Special Visual Effects In A Supporting Role and Outstanding Prosthetic Makeup For A Series, Limited Series, Movie Or Special.

Companion web series Fear the Walking Dead: Flight 462 also received two nominations, the first for Outstanding Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series, as well as Michelle Ang receiving a nod in the category Outstanding Actress In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series.

Meanwhile the Talking Dead Interactive Experience was also nominated int he category for Outstanding Interactive Program

7. It's a battle of the divas for Adele and Beyoncé!

Place your bet, music fans because two massive divas are about to go head to head! Both Adele and Beyoncé received nominations for their musical specials. Both received noms in the Outstanding Variety Special category, and also in the Outstanding Directing For A Variety Special category (for which Beyoncé is specifically nominated as a director).

Meanwhile Adele's Adele Live in New York City was also nominated for:

  • Outstanding Technical Direction, Camerawork, Video Control For A Limited Series, Movie Or Special
  • Outstanding Lighting Design/Lighting Direction For A Variety Special

And Beyoncé's Lemonade was nominated for:

  • Outstanding Production Design For A Variety, Nonfiction, Event Or Award Special
  • Outstanding Picture Editing For Variety Programming
